Only six thousand of them are visible to the naked eye, but there’s more than a hundred billion in our own galaxy, not counting the billions in yet other galaxies. Outside of science, well, you do well in whatever field and you’re awarded a star. A good student gets a gold star. An excellent hotel is marked five stars. The highest point of a Christmas tree is reserved for the star. A box-office actor is a star; his lesser counterparts are starlets.
