Scientifically, these are gaseous spheres made up of hydrogen and helium, in our minds represented as asterisks of white or silver. Only six thousand of them are visible to the naked eye, but there’s more than a hundred billion in our own galaxy, not counting the billions in yet other galaxies. Outside of science, well, you do well in whatever field and you’re awarded a star. A good student gets a gold star. An excellent hotel is marked five stars. The highest point of a Christmas tree is reserved for the star. A box-office actor is a star; his lesser counterparts are starlets.

And here now they’ve been asked to go on leave from their respective television shows if they endorse candidates. Or so says the Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting (PPCRV), citing Section 6 (6.6) of Republic Act 9006, or the Fair Election Act: “Any mass media columnist, commentator, announcer, reporter, on-air correspondent or personality who is a candidate for any elective public office or is a campaign volunteer for or employed or retained in any capacity by any candidate or political party shall be deemed resigned, if so required by their employer, or shall take a leave of absence from his/her work as such during the campaign period.”

Violators stand to be penalized with one to six years’ imprisonment.... MORE
