MANILA, Philippines — Finally, the celebration of Balagtas Day went beyond the language issue, thanks to Virgilio Almario, National Artist for Literature, and the LIRA ( Linangan sa Imahe, Retorika, at Anyo) a movement of “poet-volunteers for the nation” which he himself established and continues to mentor. Mr. Almario and members of the LIRA enhanced the City of Manila’s yearly flower-offering ceremony at the Liwasang Balagtas in Pandacan.

When “Florante at Laura,” the most famous work of Francisco Baltazar, was taught to us in the 1960’s, it was presented as a kind of epic poem in metric romance style situated in the faraway kingdom of Albania, a convoluted story of love, a clash of cultures colored with political rivalry. The Tagalog of Balagtas was a tongue twister with archaic punctuation but some of us did commit to memory the poignant stanza we did not fully comprehend:.... MORE

MANILA, Philippines - An official of the Catholic Church has appealed to the faithful particularly to the Filipino youth not to reduce the Visita Iglesia (church visit) tradition to a mere “barkada” event or outing.

Father Genaro Diwa, executive secretary of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines Episcopal Commission on Liturgy (CBCP-ECL), said while it is good that the practice of visiting seven or 14 churches during Holy Thursday brings people together, it is also saddening that sometimes the activity becomes some sort of an excursion only for some.

“It seems it is becoming more of a public display of suffering. I don’t think the Lord wants that. Suffering must be internal but deeply personal,” said Legazpi Bishop Joel Baylon, chairman of the Episcopal Commission on Youth of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (ECY-CBCP), told reporters in an interview in a recent gathering in Quezon City.

“There are other forms of sacrifice and suffering that would lead to real conversion. That is more important suffering and sacrifice that leads to conversion and not public display,” he added..... MORE
