No matter the many denials from Philippine government officials led by Noynoy that the meeting between him and US President Barack Obama that dwelled on increased American military presence in the country --- with Obama saying the US will continue to be a power in Asia-Pacific --- has nothing to do with the China-Philippines dispute adding that China should not take umbrage over these developments.

How can China, or, for that matter, Filipinos, not see through these denials, since all that talk of building up a “minimum credible defense” for the Philippines came about precisely due to the continued stand-off between Beijing and Manila at the disputed Scarborough Shoal?

Just what game is Noynoy playing that places the Filipinos in harm’s way?

Even if the country’s military does get modernized and even if the US government’s surpluses are granted to the Philippine government to create that “minimum credible defense,” the country can never hope to match China’s sea and air power..... MORE

The headline that focused on the Palace statement rationalized Noynoy’s victory swing in the United States and the United Kingdom after the impeachment of former Supreme Court Chief Justice Renato Corona was that Noynoy Aquino brought home the bacon worth $2.5 billion from the trip.

Just how fresh the bacon is, however, may burst the expectations of many that indeed new money is being poured into the country.

Most of the supposed investments are commitments made long before Aquino announced that he was tooting his horn before the two world powers to show his supposed commitment to reforms in government.
Noynoy in his report on the result of the five-day tour said half of the total investment pledges came from Rolls-Royce, Gaz Asia Ltd. and commodities trading giant Glencore, owner of the Philippine Associated Smelting and Refining Corp. (Pasar), and oil giant Royal Dutch Shell all of which are based in the UK..... MORE

“Jessica Sanchez sings national anthem for memorial day concert”: kontradiksyon ng nasyonalidad, etnisidad at globalidad

“Jessica Sanchez sings national anthem for memorial day concert”: kontradiksyon ng nasyonalidad, etnisidad at globalidad

Kahit pa nga, si Sanchez ay hindi pa nauwi sa bansa, may etnisidad ding Mexikano, at ang identifikasyon at nasyonalidad ay pagiging Amerikano, o sa partikular, may etnisidad (ibig sabihin, hindi puti o Caucasian) sa U.S..... 114 years of independence, and what do we have to show for it?

For starters, there will be the usual Independence Day flag-raising and wreath-laying activities at 7 a.m., at the Rizal Park, hence the closure of sections of Roxas Boulevard from Katigbak Drive to T.M. Kalaw Avenue and Ma. Orosa Street, and from Padre Burgos Street to TM Kalaw Avenue, starting 6 a.m., today.

Motorists on the southbound lane of Roxas Boulevard from Del Pan Bridge are advised to turn left into P. Burgos Street and straight through Taft Avenue, while those on the northbound lane of Roxas Boulevard had better turn right to T.M. Kalaw Avenue, then left to Ma. Orosa Street or straight to Taft Avenue, and passenger jeeps from MacArthur, Jones and Quezon bridges should go straight to Taft Avenue and turn right to T.M. Kalaw Avenue..... MORE

Justice and vengeance

VIEWPOINTS
Archbishop Oscar V. Cruz
06/12/2012
Justice is not vengeance. Vengeance is not justice.

Justice is a virtue. Vengeance is a vice. Justice is the way of the civilized. Vengeance is the recourse of adult children, i.e., those with puerile mentality or juvenile disposition.

Justice is based on truth. Vengeance is anchored on anger. Justice is a matter of what is right or wrong. Vengeance is in the realm of revenge. Justice and vengeance cannot coexist in one and the same subject person, about one and the same issue. Blessed are the just! Dangerous are the vengeful!

The truth of the matter is that vengeance is injustice.

There is a whale of a difference between being just and being vindictive — between the prosecution of a perceived malefactor and the persecution of someone presumed innocent until proved guilty..... MORE

A century of labor discord

AN OUTSIDERS VIEW
Ken Fuller
06/12/2012
One of the factors holding back the Philippine labor movement has been its division along ideological lines — although personality differences have undoubtedly played a part. What, then, are we to make of recent developments which seem to herald the prospect of greater unity? This week and next, we’ll cast a glance over the past century of discord before examining recent moves involving both wings of the Trade Union Congress of the Philippines.

In 1913, an organizing committee led by Hermenigildo Cruz convened a congress at which a united labor center, the Congreso Obrero de Filipinas (COF), was formed from the Union Obrera Democratica de Filipinas and the Union del Trabajo de Filipinas.

The process of division began almost immediately, with Lope Santos, Vicente Sotto and Ramon Diokno leaving to form the short-lived Assemblea Obrera in 1915 on the grounds that the COF was “an instrument of the Nacionalista Party.”.... MORE

Noy ‘subservient’ to US dictates—Church leaders

06/12/2012
An interfaith organization has accused President Aquino of being “subservient” to the United States and that his administration has jeopardized the country’s future.

The Ecumenical Bishops’ Forum, a group of Catholic, Protestants and Evangelical bishops, cited the presence of US military in the country, which according to the body, is putting the country more at risk.

In a statement, posted on the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) Web site, the church leaders noted that this also means that the country’s independence is still tarnished by the domination of foreign powers.

“The return of US troops to Philippine soil undermines our peoples’ sovereignty,” the religious leaders said as the country marks its 114th year of independence today..... MORE

Noy defends PCOS credibility as SC rules on purchase pleas

By Fernan J. Angeles 06/12/2012

President Aquino has defended the credibility of the precinct count optical scan (PCOS) machines, a day before the Supreme Court takes up the cases questioning the allegedly anomalous multibillion-peso contract for supposedly defective vote counting ma-chines to be used in next year’s elections.

He insisted that the PCOS machines have been proved credible “as manifested in the results of the 2010 national elections” even as the President claimed that the country stands to benefit through the use of the automated machines and the software that was used in it.

Going back to manual mode of electing government leaders would be a “tragedy,” he added..... MORE

RP-style democracy breeds mediocre leaders — Mahathir 06/12/2012

‘LEADER IS AS GOOD AS IDEAS HE HAS’

RP-style democracy breeds mediocre leaders — Mahathir

06/12/2012
Too much democracy has as trade off slow progress and a mediocre leadership.

This was how former Malaysian Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad described the pitfalls of the style of democracy being practiced in the Philippines in a speech delivered yesterday at the University of Santo Tomas (UST).

Mahathir led Malaysia for 22 years from 1981 to 2003 to turn his country into one of the Asian tigers under a leadership which some describe as a benign dictatorship.

For the Philippine-style democracy to work, the government must have a leader who “in particular must be incorruptible,” Mahathir said in his keynote lecture at a special convocation at the UST yesterday..... MORE

Bantay Kalikasan defies NCIP order, solicits ante-dated signatures

06/12/2012
Palawan tribal leaders have called on Bantay Kalikasan, a self-proclaimed champion of environmental protection in the province, to honor the cease order issued by the National Commission on Indigenous People (NCIP) against further developing the area it earlier illegally occupied.

This developed as NCIP field officer Ricardo Sanga who issued the cease order said Bantay Kalikasan has been soliciting signatures using ante-dated forms from tribal communities in an effort to moot the halt directive.

The ante-dated signature forms purport that the indigenous people were the ones who requested the group to occupy the area and convert it into a resort to justify the intrusion and occupation of the Sabsaban Falls in Barangay Aribungos, Brooke’s Point, Sanga said..... MORE

MMDA nabs 1,544 jaywalkers

By Pat C. Santos 06/12/2012

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has arrested more than 1,000 violators of the anti-jaywalking law after it launched its strict enforcement as part of campaign to promote road safety.

MMDA Chairman Francis Tolentino said 1,544 individuals have been apprehended and the significant number showed the need to further intensify their campaign and their information drive on the use of pedestrian lanes and footbridges in crossing streets and roadways.

Those apprehended were fined P200. The Metro Manila Council had approved an increase in the penalty from the previous P150 late last month.

However, those who could not pay the fine were given a 15-minute on-the-spot lecture on road safety and disaster preparedness by trained personnel of the agency..... MORE
