Erap gets warm welcome in Chavit turf

CANDON CITY, Ilocos Sur --- Former President Joseph Estrada was at a loss for words in describing how warmly he was received by the people of Ilocos Sur, the bailiwick of his former friend turned accuser, former Ilocos Sur Gov. and now Deputy National Security Adviser Luis “Chavit” Singson.

“I am very happy about the warm welcome given me here,” Estrada told reporters before partaking of a sumptuous lunch hosted by Candon City Mayor Allen Singson, son of Ilocos Sur Rep. Eric Singson and a distant relative of Chavit.

Estrada, who motored to this city from Laoag in Ilocos Norte yesterday morning, said he may not get the votes he got here in 1998 when he ran for president because of his botched friendship with the former governor, but he is still confident of the support of a big block of votes coming from the supporters of the Pwersa ng Masang Pilipino (PMP) gubernatorial candidate, broadcaster Efren “Rambo” Rafanan, who is said to have won the Ilocos Sur governorship but whose protest was never attended to by the Comelec.

Rafanan is Chavit’s arch political rival.... MORE

Palace twits 'boring' Noynoy on 'destiny' claim

Malacanang yesterday twitted Liberal Party standard bearer Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino's claim of his being "destined"to lead the country before the "yellow" audience, whom he called his Yellow army at the Araneta Coliseum in Cubao, Quezon City where he and his fellow LP candidates claimed to commemorate the 24th people power anniversary Thursday despite the “celebration being a purely political rally.

Deputy presidential spokesman Charito Planas said Aquino can feed the minds of the public with such self-absorbed thoughts in aid of his political ambition provided it is backed by tangible achievements that are the most important requirements for someone applying for the top public position in the country.

"He (Aquino) is entitled to that--every candidate feels that he is the winner. It's natural. But my only comment is this: when you apply for a promotion "senator to president -- what do you submit to the electorates who make the choice? Not the weakness of the others, not their misdeeds, but your own track record," Planas told a press conference.... MORE

Sectoral representation in Congress first started with the regime of Ferdinand Marcos, and at that period in congressional history, the sectoral representatives were appointed by Marcos.

His idea then, so it was said, was to ensure that a required number of congressmen, both elected and appointed, could stop any move made against Marcos.

The party-list system with which the Filipinos today are familiar, was institutionalized through a law
enacted in 1995, where a party, represented by its nominees, rather than an individual seeking a seat, is voted upon. The rationale behind the party-list voting was supposedly to provide proportional representation to sectoral groups, which system was also claimed to help create a “healthy democracy,” as it is supposed to provide a voice for the citizens in Congress and in local government.... Edsa spirit dead

Resurrecting the Edsa spirit is a useless exercise, even if the Yellows want to make it appear that the Edsa spirit is alive and well, with the Liberal Party (LP)’s concert staged at the Araneta Coliseum Thursday.

What was staged was nothing but a political rally attended by supporters of the LP candidates, led by their standard bearers Noynoy Aquino and Mar Roxas.

One hardly tries to recollect or revive the Edsa spirit through a concert or the yellow color, because Edsa 1986 was never a concert or even an entertainment production. It was all about the spirit of the people who were done with the Marcos dictatorship, looking toward change for a better future, under a democratic leadership.... MORE
