The snide whisper came with a throbbing pain when this question popped up in my half-dazed state as I caught a glimpse of a GMA Flash Report on Monday morning, when Christopher Carreon of the Spirit of Edsa Foundation admonished a small band of protesters — mostly belonging to Bayan, Gabriela and Kadamay, for staging a rally in front of the people power monument, supposedly a freedom park built to honor the many heroes of Edsa, that first edition which toppled a dictator from Malacañang, but on which common folk can no longer assemble without permission from the new authorities who have snatched (!) the revolution away from those who suffered most from the iron fist of Marcos.

The monument was built to commemorate a united people’s action to end tyranny. Years after Marcos and martial law, these same people honored through every bronze image that occupies a space in that lofty landmark to our generation’s heroism, would still suffer from tyranny, although from a different...
