When journalists relax together
The recent deaths of Benjamin Rodriguez, former editor-in-chief of the Manila Bulletin, and Ariel Bocobo, former editor of the now-defunct Phillippine Herald, brought back memories of years spent together playing tennis and brought home to me the steady thinning of the ranks of the journalists — print as well as broadcast — who made up the group known as SWAT and who continue to make up the National Press Club (NPC) tennistars. Ben Rodriguez, under whom I served as business editor, was one of SWAT’s founders. The acronym SWAT stood for Samahan ng mga Walang Asenso sa Tennis — some of the members of the group claimed, with all mischievousness, that it stood for Samahan ng mga Walang Asawang Tunay — and SWAT games were played thrice weekly at what was then the Westin Philippine Plaza Hotel....
