Congratulations to Efren Peñaflorida and his colleagues at the Dynamic Teen Company (DTC) for being named the 2009 CNN Hero of the Year. Last Friday, Ilocos Norte Rep. Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. led members of his family and the men and women of his father’s party — the Kilusang Bagong Lipunan (KBL) — in forging a coalition agreement with the grand old Nacionalista Party (NP), now led by the party’s presidential bet, Sen. Manny Villar. The agreement, dubbed by “Bongbong” himself as a “Covenant for the Future” was a bold and, by their calculations, mutually beneficial initiative as both parties march together in facing the many challenges confronting the country and the world in this century. It has its own downside, of course, but the parties believe the Filipino people will eventually look at this effort with favor rather than disdain. US Ambassador Kristie Kenney, like all US envoys before her, has had a kind of “love fest” with the Philippines. As the representative of the country’s “special friend” she has been accorded more than the usual diplomatic privileges. She has actually been behaving as a “special envoy” of sorts, having access to all kinds of people, in and out of government. She has been a peripatetic presence in almost all corners of the country — dispensing goods, handing out statements, cheering basketball teams and, yes, attending the most innocuous event to her liking. In fine, she has been treated almost like a “special Filipino”.... MORE
