Tentative Aquino going to quake zone after all

Angeles 02/08/2012President Aquino did a late change of heart yesterday, saying he is spending his birthday today in Dumaguete City, one of the areas most affected by the 6.9 magnitude earthquake that hit the Visayas last Monday, after the Palace initially said that Aquino, as much as he was deeply concerned over the rising casualty count on the strong temblor was not scheduled to visit the disaster-struck areas until later.
The government is being criticized for its slow response to the tragedy with rescuers reportedly digging through rubble with their bare hands in a frantic search for survivors, a day after a powerful earthquake killed dozens of people.
“At the moment, President Aquino wanted to make sure first that the concerned agencies do what is required and expected of them. The disaster area is also still being assessed,” presidential spokesman Abigail Valte said early yesterday..... MORE
