ILO adopts treaty to ensure protection of 53M domestic aides globally
By Michaela P. del Callar 06/18/2011The International Labor Organization (ILO) adopted last Thursday in Geneva a landmark treaty that will ensure protection to an estimated 53 million domestic helpers, including Filipinos, worldwide.
With 396 affirmative votes, 16 against and 63 abstentions, the 2011 Convention on Domestic Workers will come into force after two countries have ratified it. The Philippines, one of the leading sources of household workers, and Uruguay said they would ratify the accord.
In Manila, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) welcomed the approval of the agreement, saying its adoption would protect foreign domestics, particularly Filipinos, from abuses and other labor risks..... MORE
