He took the hills as an idealistic young man, who probably had thought he could change the system, like many of his other contemporaries who have sacrificed more, with others even giving their lives for the cause, while some were snuffed out by their own comrades, who believed in their own cleansing, but which ultimately led to the weakening of the Philippine left movement.

Tirso Alcantara, the hardened New People’ Army leader on whose hands have dried blood of former comrades who had to fall under the Maoist hardliners’ Kampanyang Ahos, the Communist Party’s cleansing its ranks of suspected infiltrators, had fallen into his captors’ hands.
