Some were teary-eyed at the Senate committee hearing or even those watching intently on live television, when the seven bishops testified. Most of them were in their senior years, old but not out, with receding hairlines but not their clear minds, blackened and wrinkled skin brought about by travels and travails to the far flung miserable areas of their dioceses in their staunch efforts to bring God and humanity’s compassion to the poor. And for a measly second hand or non-Pajero vehicles they have naively requested from a doting government agency, they are now suffering indignities and insult from all over, endangering the collapse of what personal and collective honor they have built themselves and their positions for the past many years.

The seven bishops, in particular the feisty Bishop Orlando Quevedo, who normally preaches fire and brimstone from the pulpit evinced a more demure and pensive countenance at the Senate hearing as they mouthed their defenses alternately. This is not because they were being humbled by a guilt not their own but because their whimpering hearts and minds simply are trying to endure the pain of a malicious and connived effort by this government to demean their persons and ranks.....
