MANILA, Philippines — Malacañang remains firm on its stand opposing a legislated wage hike amid the hike in fuel prices, saying that the matter should be left to the wage boards to decide.

“The government does not support a legislated wage hike,” Presidential spokesman Edwin Lacierda said following calls from the Kilusang Mayo Uno (KMU) to certify as urgent the P125 proposed wage hike.

“We support and prefer the mechanism by way of wage boards because they are in the best position to determine the working conditions, the economic conditions of those particular regions,” he added..... MORE

MANILA, Philippines — A total of 28 penitents – 22 in Pampanga and six in Bulacan – were nailed to crosses on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday in the annual macabre re-enactment of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, a practice frowned upon by the Roman Catholic Church.

In Barangay San Pedro Cutud in the City of San Fernando, Pampanga, 10 penitents were nailed to wooden crosses on a man-made “Golgotha.”

Seven other penitents were nailed to crosses in Barangay San Juan and another five in Barangay Santa Lucia.

In Barangay Kapitangan, Paombong, Bulacan, six other penitents, including a woman, were also crucified..... MORE

MANILA, Philippines — After ten years of playing Jesus Christ in the “Senakulo sa Lansangan” (Senakulo on the Street), 27-year-old JR Galvez shows no signs of quitting the role, vowing to continue what he started with the group “Dulaang Matiaga.”

Since his participation in 1998, when he was a high school student, he has played numerous roles in the annual senakulo.

Unlike other senakulo characters who inherited the acting tradition from their parents or community elders, it was Galvez himself who sought a part in the production..... MORE

MANILA, Philippines – While the other oil companies seesawed on price adjustments this week, independent player Unioil Petroleum Philippines Inc. went on with its own marketing strategy by offering price discounts over the Holy Week duration.

In a statement, the company noted that for every P1,000 petroleum product purchases at its participating stations, the customer can avail of P50 worth of discount.
