Int’l mission urges gov’t to stop land-use conversion in Hacienda Looc

“We used to call Hacienda Looc a paradise, with its fertile soil and rich marine resources. The outsiders came and saw its beauty and our problems began.” – Isabelo Cailaya, fisherfolk leader.

MANILA — Delegates of an international solidarity mission called on the government to stop the biggest real estate developers from wreaking havoc on the lives of farmers and fisherfolk of Hacienda Looc in Nasugbu, Batangas.

In an eight-page executive summary submitted to the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR), members of the mission asserted that “land use conversions and large scale tourism projects resulted to landlessness and food insecurity.”

The mission, composed of delegates from the United Church of Canada, Aliansi Gerakan Reforma Agraria (Agra – Indonesia), research students from Japan and Belgium, the Malaysia-based Pesticide Action Network Asia Pacific, Asian Peasant Coalition, Kasama-TK, Samahang Magsasaka sa Batangas, Farmers Development Center (Fardec), Ibon International, Promotion for Church People’s Response and Kilusang Magbubukid ng Pilipinas, was held February 11 to 15.

In its report, the mission stated that “the biggest real estate developers in the country, in collusion with various government agencies, have made their landgrabbing activities appear legal and legitimate.”
“Government policies, including bogus agrarian reform programs like the Presidential Decree 27 and the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program (CARP), have denied Hacienda Looc farmers of their rights to the land,” Willy Marbella, KMP deputy secretary general, said. In fact, according to Marbella, “real estate developers, using the CARP itself, managed to exempt Hacienda Looc from agrarian reform.”.... MORE

Preparing to settle into watching yet another session of Supreme Court (SC) Chief Justice Renato Corona’s impeachment trial, I get information about proposed House Resolution 2140, “expressing the sense of the House of Representatives to appeal to the local TV and movie industry to minimize, prevent, or stop typecasting congressmen and congresswomen as villains or crooks in movies and television telenovelas, in order not to create stereotypes or negative public perception against members of the House of Representatives,” authored by Rep. Aurelio “Dong” Gonzales Jr., first term representative of the third district of Pampanga.

I first believe it a joke.

But I get a soft copy of the proposal through e-mail, with parts stating that “Whereas, as the people’s representatives, majority of the congressmen and congresswomen do their best to bring excellent public service to their constituents; Whereas, there have been a few congressmen who may have been involved in crimes but these are the exceptions, rather than the rule.... Iran to unleash 'God’s vengeance' against potential air strike

Iran has started a massive training exercise to protect its “nuclear centers” from potential air strikes. The four-day drill will unite missile defense systems, radars and interceptor planes in southern Iran.

“These exercises aim to reinforce the integrated abilities of the country's anti-air defenses," said a statement from the Katem-ol-Anbia military air base – the nerve center of Iran’s missile defense operations.

The exercises aim to improve cooperation between Iran’s elite Revolutionary Guard and its regular army, and will cover a total area of 190,000 square kilometers..... MORE

Anonymous promises attacks every Friday

Anonymous promises attacks every Friday

“You should have expected us.”

It’s the calling card that Anonymous has signed-off their online assaults with since the start of their Internet crusades. As the hacktivists continue to come down hard on the websites of corrupt corporations and governments, they’re offering the warning once more.

Anonymous is cautioning future targets something that they think should have been clear of awhile ago: they’re serious. Following a series of highly-publicized attacks on the websites and computer networks of government and private sector entities across the globe, operatives allegedly involved in the hacking collective Anonymous announced that their ruthless assaults and raids will not cease. Campaigns will continue, says the group, and they will carry on with revealing the results of their handiwork every week..... MORE

Abortion — 3

VIEWPOINTS
Archbishop Oscar V. Cruz
02/21/2012
“Aperson who procures effective abortion, incurs a latae sententiae excommunication.” (Canon 1398 CIC).

On the part of the Church, the thus cited canonical provision has specific reference to an individual with mind and will functions (“person”) in the desired and designed procurement of abortion. The Church Law is directly relevant to the killing of a fetus in the womb of the mother (“abortion”). The normative enactment is only applicable when an abortion in fact (“effective”) takes place. The penalty of excommunication is automatically incurred (latae sententiae) the moment factual abortion happens, irrespective of place and time.

When is abortion said to be procured? Canonically speaking, procurement of abortion means not merely the reality of abortion but also the due knowledge and deliberate intention of having the fetus in the mother’s womb actually killed..... MORE

Why the question on Noy’s mental health persists

INSIDE CONGRESS
Charlie Manalo
02/21/2012
Ever since he sought the presidency, Noynoy Aquino had been hounded by questions regarding the state of his mental health although he was a somehow successful in deflecting the issue during the campaign period en route to his victory in the 2010 presidential elections.

And for more than one and a-half years, the rumors regarding his mental health had been relegated to the backseat as he successfully diverted public attention from it following his all-out assault against his predecessor, former President, now Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and her supposed allies still in the corridors of power.

But while GMA opted to remain silent and let the issue be resolved in the proper venue, the courts, the latest object of his tirades chose not and engaged him in a tit for tat..... MORE

Gunmen kill 3 civilians, wound 17 others in assaulting Kidapawan jail

By Mario J. Mallari 02/21/2012
Three civilians were killed while 17 others were wounded after some 50 fully-armed men assaulted Kidapawan City Jail in an attempt to spring out a detained member of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front-Special operations Group (MILF-SOG) on Sunday night.

Military Eastern Mindanao Command (Eastmincom) spokesman Col. Leopoldo Galon said that more or less 50 armed men attacked the Kidapawan City Jail around 9:50 p.m. to rescue Datukan Samad alias Lastikman, who is a known MILF-SOG member.

Galon said that the armed men, wearing black fatigue uniforms, initially breached the perimeter of the jail facility by successfully detonating two improvised explosive devices (IEDs), resulting in the wounding of five personnel of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP)..... MORE

Psyche report on Noynoy cites ‘desire for revenge’

02/21/2012
For Renato Corona, the embattled Chief Justice, it is the authenticity of bank documents that the House prosecutors hold that may tilt the weight of public opinion against him but for President Aquino it remains a perennial struggle to disprove allegations of his mental capacity and the credibility of a psychiatric evaluation that Jesuit priest Jaime Bulatao supposedly issued on him in 1979 when he was 19 years old.

A facsimile of the report resurfaced yesterday after becoming a contentious topic during the campaign period during the 2010 presidential elections.

Corona in response to the demand of Aquino for him to reveal his dollar bank accounts, issued a call for Aquino to make public his psychiatric records..... MORE

AMLC probed CJ’s 2010 records sans court order

By Benjamin B. Pulta and Angie M. Rosales 02/21/2012

The Anti-Money Laundering Council (AMLC) may have played a major part in the leakage of the bank records of the Chief Magistrate which may have landed in the hands of the prosecution panel

Several senator-judges ex-pressed alarm and fears over the examination done by the AMLC officer without any court order laying the predicate crime of kidnapping and other crimes under the Anti-Money Laundering law, as the AMLC apparently conducts such examinations on “politically exposed persons” among whom may be senator-judges.

Sen. Joker Arroyo first expressed this fear on the apparent concerted effort to pin down the CJ who may be followed by the next ones who get on the wrong side of Malacañang and have their bank records investigated should they defy an order from Malacañang..... MORE

Makati has no maternal death in January, says Binay

02/21/2012
Makati Mayor Jejomar Erwin Binay Jr. denied report made by the Department of Health-National Capital Region (DoH-NCR ) which said that there were eight cases of maternal death in the city-owned hospital in January.

Binay’s denial was based from Makati Health Department records stating that there were no maternal deaths recording during that month.

“Contrary to what was reported, there were, in fact, zero deaths of mothers due to childbirth recorded on January. The reports may have caused undue alarm among our residents, and we hope the DoH-NCR would take steps to clarify the matter,” the mayor said..... MORE
