The golden boys of gastroenterology
A person’s digestive system is every bit as important as his heart or his brain, considering that if a body is unable to take in food or digest food properly, death is certain to occur. Yet institutions and issues concerned with the human digestive system are not perceived as being as deserving of as those concerned with the other major parts of the human anatomy. This is a pity because the branch of medicine that deals with the digestive system — the branch called gastroenterology — is a part of medicine that has recorded some of the greatest technical advances and has made one of the largest contributions to the maintenance of health and the prolongation of human life....
