Access Hollywood: Pentagon, CIA leaked Bin Laden raid info to filmmakers

aid that killed Osama bin Laden may have been leaked to Hollywood. The CIA and Pentagon are accused of dangerously tight involvement with the writers of a movie, denounced as pre-election Obama propaganda.

The Judicial Watch group has released almost 300 pages of Pentagon and CIA documents indicating that the Obama administration and the Department of Defense worked in tight collaboration with Oscar-winning filmmakers Kathryn Bigelow and Mark Boal (the director and screenwriter of "The Hurt Locker").

The veteran moviemaking team is shooting a movie based on the covert operation that tracked down and assassinated Osama bin Laden, dubbed the Zero Dark Thirty..... MORE

A very precious and significant reality is under siege. A truly delicate and relevant institution is being subjected not only to question but also to contradiction. The law of nature itself is undergoing change — if not downright ridicule — through but the preference of law of man. The truth nevertheless remains that in all these “modern” desires and designs, the ultimate losers are always men, women and children especially.

Meantime, the reality remains as such, the institution stays the same, and futile remain any and all attempts for man to change the postulates of nature that were already there long before he appeared, and that will remain as such long after he is long gone.

As of now, both in the first world country and in this Third World Nation, there are individuals and groups thereof who want marriage to suit their personal preference and consequent option. How? By ardently inventing such curiosities as the following — all not only undermining but in effect making a mockery of marriage: Same Sex “Marriage.” Group “Marriage.” Renewable “Marriage.” Such novelties are both interesting and entertaining — not to mention their respective futility in attempting to change or deny reality as defined by natural law..... IBP chief urges House accusers, Drilon to consider CJ challenge

By Benjamin B. Pulta and Charlie V. Manalo 05/24/2012

A leader of the Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP) has called on lawmakers as well as Sen. Franklin Drilon to heed Chief Justice Renato Corona’s call to sign waivers allowing disclosure of their bank accounts in the spirit of full transparency and public accountability.

IBP president and lawyer Roan Libarios, however, yesterday said Corona should have issued his waiver to make his peso and dollar accounts in various banks without any condition “for the sake of solid credibility.”

“But we also share and join in his challenge to the good legislators to execute similar waivers,” he stressed.

Corona dared the 188 House complainants and Drilon, his staunch critic, to open to the public their bank accounts during his lengthy opening statement made before the Senate impeachment court last Tuesday where he addressed the alleged inaccuracies in his statement of assets, liabilities and networth (SALn)..... CORONA REMAINS IN ICU DUE TO HEART CONDITION

CJ statement admitted into impeach records

By Angie M. Rosales, Benjamin B. Pulta and Fernan J. Angeles 05/24/2012

The Senate impeachment court, despite an earlier threat from its presiding officer Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile to strike out the testimony of Supreme Court Chief Justice Renato Corona if he failed to return to the witness stand, appeared to have relented yesterday and admitted the full narrative of Corona into the court’s records as his testimony on allegations hurled at him, including those not covered by the Articles of Impeachment such as the alleged $10 million to $12 million bank deposits in purported 82 accounts.

A coronary condition scuttled Corona’s scheduled appearance before the impeachment court yesterday where he was originally set to continue his turn on the witness stand.

Supreme Court spokesman Midas Marquez said Corona was taken to The Medical City (TMC) in Pasig City last Tuesday the other night and was brought to the hospital’s intensive care unit (ICU) yesterday..... MORE

DENR probes cutting of trees in Palawan

05/24/2012
Alarmed by the reported massive cutting of trees perpetrated by an environment group which earlier occupied and converted into a resort a sacred place for indigenous people (IP) in Palawan, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) immediately ordered an investigation into the illegal activities.

DENR Secretary Ramon Paje said over the weekend that he has directed the DENR Region IV Office to look into the cutting by the ABS-CBN Foundation’s Bantay Kalikasan of 25 grown trees which served as banks protection of the river downstream of Sabsaban Falls and part of the IPs’ place of worship in Barangay Aribungos in Brooke’s Point town.

Paje tasked DENR Regional Executive Director Concordio Zuniga to investigate the complaint after he was informed that the department’s community officer who is concurrently the OIC-provincial officer is among those charged for complicity in the intrusion and cutting of trees..... MORE

Warrants out for arrest of Globe Asiatique execs

05/24/2012
Warrants of arrest have been issued against Globe Asiatique (GA) owner Delfin Lee and his co-accused after a judge found probable cause for the syndicated estafa case filed against them, Vice President Jejomar Binay said yesterday.

Binay, the chairman of the Housing and Urban Development Coordinating Council, said Judge Amifaith Fider-Reyes of the Regional Trial Court Branch 42 in San Fernando, Pampanga, issued the warrants of arrest Tuesday with no recommendation for bail.

“Globe Asiatique defrauded the ordinary workers who are contributors of Pag-IBIG Fund. The company defrauded hardworking citizens of Pampanga by selling property they have purchased legitimately to other buyers, a practice known as double selling. Disgruntled employees of the Bureau of Immigration (BI) have asked the Department of Justice (DoJ) to reject the recommendations to be made by the bureau officials on the hiring of new immigration officers to be assigned to the different ports and subports nationwide.

Citing a grave case of favoritism, employees said Justice Secretary Leila de Lima should review and rescind the list provided by the BI’s promotion and hiring board headed by Associate Commissioner Siegfred Mison.

They added that Mison, who is a lawyer and a former military officer, should exercise “delicadeza and fair play” when he allowed one of its trusted staff to take the qualifying examinations intended for the position of immigration officer I (IO-I)..... MORE

Rampant smuggling killing local industries, says solon

By Charlie V. Manalo 05/24/2012

With the country’s unemployment rising by a full 10 percent for the first quarter of the year, members of the House minority bloc yesterday blamed the rampant smuggling which they claim is killing local industries.

At their weekly press briefing, House Minority Leader Quezon Rep. Danilo Suarez said that among the many evils which have resurrected under this administration, it is smuggling which he believes contributed mainly to the rise in the unemployment index.

“Last year saw the disappearance of 2,000 plus container vans from Customs in broad daylight. The other week, local hog growers threatened to declare a pork holiday because they’re losing up to P15 billion a year to smuggling. And most recently coconut oil refiners have complained about being victimized by smugglers of imported soya and palm cooking oil,” Suarez said..... MORE

Harvey Keh, the yellow leader of a claimed good governance group, has given his reply on the show cause order presiding judge Senate President Juan Ponce-Enrile insisted on.
Keh claimed overzealousness in handing an envelope containing alleged bank transaction records of Chief Justice Renato Corona, saying that these are unauthenticated and that he cannot attest to its accuracy or veracity.

That’s just Keh’s way out, but there definitely was the intention on his, and his yellow group to portray Corona as guilty of having amassed illegal wealth, as shown by his anonymously given bank transactions which he claimed he downloaded from the Internet.

The way it looks, Keh, his group, Malacañang and the Ombudsman wanted these alleged bank accounts to come out in the trial and the only way to do it was to ensure that the Senate, through its chief, got hold of these documents..... MORE

It was good thing that the Senate court deferred voting on the motion to cast a vote again on whether to disobey the Supreme Court (SC)’s temporary restraining order (TRO) on the baring of the dollar accounts deposited in the Philippine Savings Bank (PSBank) belonging to Chief Justice Renato Corona.

The reason is simple: There would have been a constitutional crisis and a very serious one that could have easily destroyed the rule of law in this country.

Sure, the senators — or at least a majority of them, could vote to disobey the SC’s TRO, as too many senator-judges keep on claiming that the Senate impeachment court is sui generis — as if it could do what it pleases. But the fact is that if the majority had chosen to disobey the high court’s TRO, then the senator-judges would have led the way in telling the Filipino people that, whenever they do not believe that the ruling of the high court is the right ruling, they have every right not to obey the law, which would create chaos, followed by pure anarchy.

At the same time, say the majority of the senator-justices did vote to disobey the SC’s TRO, and the impeachment court now orders the PSBank and whatever else banks it wants to subpoena to open the alleged dollar accounts of the Chief Justice, just who will the bank officials obey? The Senate impeachment court or the SC?.... MORE

The majority of Spain's educational institutions have closed as teachers and students take to the streets to defend their rights. The government has cut billions of euros from educational sector expenses.

The strike is taking place on all levels, from elementary schools to universities in all but three of Spain's 17 regions. As many as a million teachers and seven million students are expected to take part in Tuesday's demonstrations.

If the austerity package goes through, it will reduce government subsidies on education by more than 20 per cent. The measure, unions say, will result in worsening educational conditions, mass teacher layoffs and higher tuition costs..... MORE

NDAA 2013: Congress approves domestic deceptive propaganda

NDAA 2013: Congress approves domestic deceptive propaganda

Reauthorizing the indefinite detention of US citizens without charge might be the scariest provision in next year’s defense spending bill, but it certainly isn’t the only one worth worrying about.

An amendment tagged on the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2013 would allow for the United States government to create and distribute pro-American propaganda within the country’s own borders under the alleged purpose of putting al-Qaeda’s attempts at persuading the world against Western ideals on ice. Former US representatives went out of there way to ensure their citizens that they’d be excluded from government-created media blasts, but two lawmakers currently serving the country are looking to change all that.

Congressmen Mac Thornberry (R-TX) and Adam Smith (D-WA) introduced “The Smith-Mundt Modernization Act of 2012” (H.R. 5736) last week during discussions for the NDAA 2013. It was voted on by the US House of Representatives to be included in next year’s defense spending bill, which was then voted on as a whole and approved..... MORE

Opposition mounts as US increases military aid, sends nuclear submarine to Subic

The Aquino government will again pin its hopes of armed forces modernization on US hand-me-downs, but the reality is that all these do not really help in strengthening Philippine sovereignty nor in asserting our claims over disputed territories.” – Renato Reyes, Bayan
By INA ALLECO R. SILVERIO

Bulatlat.com
MANILA — Patriotic people’s organizations led by the Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (BAYAN) have declared that there is no room for doubt that unless unequivocal protests are launched against it, the United States is set to reestablish its military bases in the Philippines. In the last week, protests erupted over the presence of a United States nuclear-powered attack submarine in the former Subic Nava Base in Zambales.

The Bagong Alyansang Makabayan said the entry of the USS North Carolina (SSN 777), a Virginia class attack submarine considered one of the “stealthiest, most technologically advanced” in the world, is a sign that the US is intent on reestablishing its military base in the Philippines.

Bayan secretary-general Renato Reyes said that if developments are any gauge, it appears as if US military bases are back in the country.

“ Virtual basing and hosting of US warships are being justified by the Visiting Forces Agreement and the Mutual Logistics Support Agreement. Philippine ports like Subic are again providing logistics support for US ships. We might see more of these port calls now that the US is rebalancing towards Asia,” said Reyes said..... MORE

P2-B Libis property root of family feud — Corona

By Angie M. Rosales 05/23/2012
Supreme Court Chief Justice Renato Corona defended the honor of his wife, Cristina, before his accusers and the Senate impeachment court, saying that she came from an old-rich family that could easily explain some of their assets.

But in doing so, Corona was forced to wash dirty linen in public, by making a tell-all of the decades-old “family feud” now surrounding ownership dispute among the heirs in the Basa-Guidote Enterprises Inc. (BGEI).

Corona narrated that the root of the feud involving his wife and her estranged relatives was a two-hectare Basa compound in Libis near the Eastwood upscale development worth around P2.5 billion which through unexplained circumstances, the title for which was named as being owned solely by Jose Basa III, his father-in-law, leaving out the name of Asuncion, Corona’s mother-in-law..... It looks like the senators who are claiming they were approached by a certain Manny Cuevas who is purportedly lobbying for the acquittal of Chief Justice Renato Corona in behalf of Iglesia ni Cristo are either prevaricating on the supposed lobbying tale or were simply victims of disinformation.

MANILA — The Exodus for Justice and Peace (EJP) based in Davao has launched a solidarity mission dubbed “Duyog sa Panaw” in Trento Agusan del Sur to help residents decrying the continued military operations in their communities. Based on latest reports, there are currently more than 300 troops under the 10th Infantry Division Eastern Mindanao Command in Trento under the command of Lt. Gen. Jorge V. Segovia.

Several recent US books and films have looked back at the origins of US imperialism in the late 19th Century (as opposed to the warm-up period in which the USA dispossessed those Native Americans still alive and stole a huge chunk of Mexico). The works are sometimes explicit in their intent, perhaps spurred by the sheer awfulness of the imperialist present, and here John Sayles’s novel A Moment in the Sun, which we discussed last week, and his film Amigo, are examples.

But occasionally the reference is subtle, possibly even unconscious, and The Descendants (written and directed The Descendants, from the novel by Kaui Hart Hemmings) belongs to this category. We need not concern ourselves here with the main plot, for references to Hawaii’s past come in the sub-plot, in which Honolulu lawyer Mathew King, played by George Clooney, has to decide whether to sell a beautifully-situated plot of land originally owned by his ancestor Queen Liliuokalani and passed down through subsequent generations. One online comment I saw complained that Clooney is too white to pass as Hawaiian. But this surely is the whole point — and one which the film makes even more emphatically when the rest of the family turns up to hear his decision, for some of them are blond..... MORE

I write this on his 20th death anniversary, and the pain of loss is just as strong, that all too-horrible numbness after lifting the phone, and hearing my daughter-in-law sob: “Wala na si Lino, iniwan na tayo!” He would have been 73 this year, were it not for that car accident on May 21, 1990.

Lino Brocka was a genuine person. What you saw was what you got; he was totally incapable of making under the table deals. We got along pretty well, which is not to say we didn’t fight, because we did, several times over, and how. But our friendship survived our numerous disagreements, and that, perhaps, was an indication of how well we understood each other’s nature as fighters.

The first time we fought was when we were doing Dung-Aw, over someone in his staff. Lino, when he worked, didn’t see himself only as a director. He was also mother hen, and you’d never met one more protective than he. So much so that when I told him my suspicions regarding his production manager, he resented it and stopped talking to me midway of the shoot. Even so, he worked professionally.... MORE

BUT REMINDS IGLESIA, CBCP: SENATE DECIDES

Noy says no conviction lobby

By Fernan J. Angeles and Angie M. Rosales 05/22/2012

The timing of the visit of President Aquino to the Iglesia ni Cristo leader, Ka Eduardo Manalo, was certainly suspect, given that it was earlier reported by an administration-friendly newspaper that INC representatives had been making the rounds of the senator-judges to get an acquittal vote for Chief Justice Renato Corona. His spokesman, Edwin Lacierda, however, while admitting that the INC leader and Aquino did discuss the impeachment trial, there was no lobbying from him for conviction votes.

At the same time Aquino reminded both the Catholic Church hierarchy and the INC that it is not they that will decide on the fate of the Chief Justice but the Senate Court.

Aquino personally went to the Iglesia ni Cristo central temple in a perceived effort for him to appease and persuade the influential religious group to drop its support for the Chief Justice..... MORE

DoLE chief releases guidelines for trafficking, child labor cases

By Mina Diaz 05/22/2012

Labor Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz on Monday issued a manual of procedures that would serve as standard operating procedure in dealing with complaints against trafficking in persons, illegal recruitment and child labor.

Baldoz said the manual is part of the government’s effort to curb illegal and predatory activities that take advantage of job seekers and to strengthen its mechanism against such menace.

“The (Department of Labor and Employment) strongly advocates safeguarding human dignity, especially of women and children and the issuance of the manual under Department Circular 2 is just one of the steps we are taking to uphold it,” the labor chief said..... MORE

Bill shortens workday of pregnant workers

05/22/2012
Citing the constitutional rights of working women for healthful working conditions, Sen. Manuel Villar has filed a bill prescribing a six-hour working day for pregnant employees.

In filing Senate Bill 3174, or “Pregnant Women Workers Act of 2012,” Villar said work brought unwanted stress to the employed pregnant women that might affect their unborn child.

“Pregnant women have a hard time striking a balance between working and getting proper rest. As such, this representation finds it proper that the State allow pregnant women to work and earn but limit the time for work to insure that employed pregnant women get enough rest,” Villar said in the explanatory note of his measure..... Claims that US will aid Philippines against China, a fantasy

The Philippines, because it relies on the US as treaty “partner,” has not developed its own military capability.

Sidebar: Opposition mounts as US increases military aid, sends nuclear submarine to Subic

MANILA – The Philippines, China and even the United States “know they will benefit from a peaceful resolution of the conflict” which outwardly emanates from contesting claims on Spratlys and Scarborough shoal. In an interview with UP professor and geopolitics expert Roland Simbulan, he reiterated that China, the Philippines and the US need each other as markets for exports and, particularly with US and China, also for capital.

But the Aquino government’s tack of talking tough against China, without the backing of its own defense capability in case China obliges and engages the Philippines in a war, is not wise at all nor helpful to Filipinos, according to Simbulan. He explained that the Aquino government is mistaken in thinking that the US is a Philippine ally against China..... MORE

50% power cut, not wage hike DIE HARD III Herman Tiu Laurel 05/21/2012

50% power cut, not wage hike

DIE HARD III
Herman Tiu Laurel
05/21/2012
The newspapers have just reported that the Metro Manila Wage Board approved a P30-minimum wage hike to be factored into the “cost-of-living allowance” and given in two tranches. Some labor groups that demanded a P125-daily minimum wage increase described the wage board’s decision as “loose change.”

Acting president of the Employers’ Confederation of the Philippines (Ecop) Rene Soriano questioned the move, asking, “Will the wage increase create jobs? The resounding answer is no,” adding that the increase would, in fact, worsen the conditions of vulnerable workers.
This tit-for-tat between the labor and business sectors goes on every year with the same predictable outcome — an unhappy compromise where both lose and the employable unemployed lose even more.

According to Dr. Rosalinda Pineda-Ofreneo, professor of the UP College of Social Work and Community Development, the entire informal sector constitutes around 24.6 million informal workers and operators, or 76.34 percent of the country’s labor force. Well, the recent minimum wage hike just pushed that figure higher.

The Kilusang Mayo Uno (KMU) claims that workers have no reason to be happy with the small wage hike granted by the wage board. Its secretary-general Roger Saluta says, “It’s another reason to intensify the struggle for a legislated wage hike.” So, every year, the KMU revs up for the perfunctory “struggle” then settles for the predictable “loose change” while continuing to charge fees from its members to keep itself going.

The unionized labor force in the Philippines, according to one report in Bulatlat.com, has dropped from a high of 2.97 million 20 years ago to 319,408 in 2010 or 10 percent of the wage earners in the country and less than one percent of the country’s labor force. The underground economy is now reported to be 70 percent of the national economy; and of the more or less 40 million labor force, 35 million are invisible to the formal, legal system of wages, incomes, social security and benefits. Workers and employees in the underground economy have a free-wheeling, negotiated wage system — and maybe that’s why this sector is thriving and growing at the expense of the formal economy.

During the discussions and debates on the latest wage hike petition, one focus of interest was the comparative levels of minimum wages in the Asean and Asian regions, with the employers’ side highlighting the $10 per day in the Philippines in relation to Vietnam’s $2.20, Cambodia’s $2, Indonesia’s $5.20 to 5.90, and China’s $3.75 to $5.

KMU reacts saying most Asean and Asian counterparts may be receiving lower minimum wages but their living conditions are way better because of lower local commodities and services costs, and higher purchasing power. Moreover, in reaction to BS Aquino III’s rejection of his group’s wage hike demand, KMU chairman Elmer Labog adds, “The problem with the President is that he is always taking the viewpoint of the foreign investors, never of Filipino workers.”

The problem with both of them — Aquino and Labog — is that they never take the viewpoint of the real engine — the drivers and workers of the real economy — the SMEs (small and medium enterprises), which constitute 95 percent of Philippine businesses and employ the vast majority of both formal and informal sector workers.

Every year, this charade among the three parties in the wage issue — government, labor and employers’ representatives — is played out without ever resolving the matter to the benefit of our people and economy. The growing hardships of the working class are never solved in any wage boards since there are more fundamental problems that the decision makers know of but have nary the guts nor will to confront decisively.

Of course, foremost of these problems is our country’s “highest power rate in Asia” that’s debilitating every aspect of Philippine life and livelihood. Hernan Nicdao admitted this much on a GNN show. After reciting labor’s mantra, the talk shifted to the Filipinos’ standard of living and, inevitably, to the price of electricity.
The Trade Union Congress of the Philippines (TUCP) had already demanded government action on this problem late last year. But as it was unfortunately not sustained, then it’s back to the old charade.

Jojo Borja of Iligan Light and Power called me last weekend to report that their power utility company’s retained earnings the past year alone exceeded their authorized capital despite an electricity rate of only P5.50 per kilowatt-hour (kwh) and a customer base of only 60,000, which from all angles, is a fantastic, if not immoral, return for the company that Borja blames on the Electric Power Industry Reform Act (Epira).

Thus, Borja also wonders how much more a giant utility company such as the Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) is raking in since it charges P12 per kwh with a customer base of almost 6 million and with the majority of industry and commerce situated in its 9,337-square kilometer-franchise area, where the concentration of the national economy is.

It is very clear from the example of Iligan Light and Power that electricity rates in the country can be brought down dramatically and radically — if only the will to demand and achieve it is there. That will certainly do all the workers of the Philippines — in both the formal and informal sectors — greater good than all the past and future tripartite wage negotiations can ever hope to attain.

Over two years ago, Noynoy claimed that with him at the helm of Malacaang, there would not only be change, but also reforms in government, whether in the executive, legislative or judicial department.

That pledge, people now know, is meaningless and meant to be meaningless, because as sure as sin, Noynoys idea of change, is merely a change of faces in government, with him and his KKKs (kaibigan, kaklase, kabarilan), which include the Liberal Party.

As for his idea of reforms in government, again, the reforms are in the form of kicking out the appointees of the previous administration, and placing his appointees in their positions not to introduce reforms, but mostly to enable Noynoy to prostitute the institutions that are now headed by his appointees..... Impeached Supreme Court Chief Justice Renato Corona faces a paradox when he appears to testify before the Senate impeachment court tomorrow to primarily answer several allegations hurled at him as senator-judges plan a vote on whether or not to comply with the Supreme Court restraint order on making public the contents of his dollar accounts while the Palace stated that it is convinced that Corona should be convicted “regardless whether the chief magistrate has one or 82 dollar accounts.”

Corona’s lawyers had said the Supreme Court head would bare all regarding his banking accounts in his testimony.

Senator-judges, on the eve of Corona’s testimony, indicated holding a likely caucus to vote on the opening of his alleged dollar accounts, a decision that will reflect their decision whether to obey the high court’s temporary restraining order (TRO) on its being bared to the public..... MORE

Tobacco farmers from the northern part of Luzon voiced out fears that Malacañang may be getting distorted data that lead the government to believe tobacco planters would benefit from a new sin tax system.

Expressing apprehension over the possible enactment of House Bill 5727 providing a new tax computation system for alcohol and cigarette products, the Federation of Free Farmers (FFF) also asked the Aquino administration to go slow in the implementation of radical measures which may eventually boomerang on the Philippine economy, such as HB 5727 should it be enacted.

Even in the supposed blacklisting of the country by the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) against money laundering, it appeared that Noynoy’s dirty tricks operators were at work to exert pressure on Congress into rushing the amendments to the Anti-Money Laundering Act (AMLA) and allow him and his allies easier access to bank accounts of individuals whom they can label as having a suspicious account.

The process needed to inquire into a bank account will be greatly reduced in the amendments and aside from the law being used largely against drug, crime syndicate and terrorist money, the amended law is also being targeted as a toll against graft, which had evolved into having a self-serving definition for the yellow regime of Noynoy.

One of the proposed amendments in the bill will be to allow authorities, particularly the Anti-Money Laundering Council (AMLC) to look into bank accounts ex-parte or without the need to notify the holders of the accounts by the mere identification of the account as having suspicious transactions..... Vatican slams new book of leaked documents as ‘criminal’

The Vatican is threatening to take legal action against those responsible for publishing a new book of leaked internal documents. The book sheds light on power struggles and corruption inside the Holy See and the thinking of its embattled top banker.

Pope Benedict XVI has already appointed a commission of cardinals to investigate the “Vatileaks” scandal. It erupted earlier this year with the publication of leaked memos alleging corruption and mismanagement in Holy See affairs and internal squabbles over its efforts to comply with international anti-money-laundering norms.
