Finally, a real ‘MMORS’ clean-up

“MMORS” is short for the Meycauayan-Marilao-Obando-River-System, a labyrinth of rivers, esteros and other bodies of water flowing through and influences the densest populated areas within the Metro Manila and Central Luzon regions. The system has been tagged by no less than the New York-based Blacksmith Institute and other reputable environmental monitoring groups as one of the most polluted, if not the dirtiest, river systems in the world. This system which is directly interconnected with the Pasig and Pampanga rivers gets to dump all of its wastes into Manila Bay, another body of water which has also been tagged as one big waste basin, and, by now, should be inching its way toward being part of the select group of “dead bodies of water” in the world like Lake Baikal in Russia.

Well, MMORS’ most polluted appellation may soon be a thing of the past. It has taken some time but with loads of political will and with the binding inducement of the recent Supreme Court ruling on the Manila Bay clean-up, the DENR and concerned local government units, namely, the Province of Bulacan, Valenzuela City and the towns of Marilao, Meycauayan and Obando, among others, signed a memorandum of agreement (MoA) to encourage and guide the clean up of the rivers and the influenced areas in a scientific and expanded manner..... magaling. tagal na infamous ang MMORS ah. tanong ko lang eh ano ang mekanismo ng landfill na ito at nasabi mong maganda sa kalikasan? paano ipro.proseso ang mga basura at duming makukuha?

"Expected to be operational by mid-2012, the 44-hectare landfill will complement the dredging, declogging and desilting operations to be undertaken by both the national government and the LGUs by providing an especially designed and constructed area to receive, process and dispose of the wastes in a manner that will not endanger the environment and the health of the nearby communities. On a practical basis, the landfill will provide the setting for a fast, expanded and intensive clean up on a year round, 24/7 basis as it can accommodate up to 1,000 metric tons of ordinary and processed wastes daily. “The Ecoshield Project,” Alvarado and Claudio noted, “is actually a solution to the many problems encountered in the declogging, desilting and even ordinary garbage disposal operations in the areas concerned and will complement as well the ongoing efforts to clean up Manila Bay.” Valenzuela City Mayor Sherwin Gatchalian echoed the officials’ sentiment, noting that for the first time in his nine years as mayor a lasting solution to the perennial garbage and desilting problem in the waterways will be made available."
