Solons using BoC as ‘milking cows’

A lawmaker yesterday bared some of her colleagues in the House of Representatives have been demanding money from collectors of the Bureau of Customs (BoC) in some major ports in the country.

Requesting anonymity, the solon, a member of one of the most powerful congressional committees which deals with everything about taxes, said that the small group of lawmakers is asking the collectors to give them P500 to P1,000 per container van.

“Despite P-Noy’s straight path campaign, this small group of lawmakers is trying to play around and creatively finding ways how to get around with the President’s tough order to push clean governance. They have thick face,” the source made the allegations in the midst of corruption charges in the military.

Asked how the operation is carried out, the solon said that since the members of the said committee hold oversight function, they conduct visitations of the major ports instead of monitoring collection of tariff dues from the imported goods, they impose on the Customs collector their share of the loot from their collections.....
