Civilian experts in Afghanistan adapt to life in the US Army focus 03/02/2010 KHOGIANI — Alongside the thousands of US troops being sent to Afghanistan is a smaller band of ordinary Americans, using skills learned back home to help tackle an insurgency now in its ninth year. Several hundred have been selected for their specialist peacetime experience in what has been dubbed the “civilian surge.” Among them, living and working alongside US soldiers on a small Army post in eastern Afghanistan, are a former New York police detective, a Russian-speaking aid expert and a female civil servant.....
