WASHINGTON — Barack Obama Wednesday came across as a defiant and slightly caustic warrior for change, but it was unclear whether his debut State of the Union address had righted his listing presidency.

Bloodied by a brutal political year, Obama set out to show that his sweeping agenda was not derailed by diminished approval ratings or fierce Republican attempts to defeat his presidency.

“We do not give up. We do not quit. We do not allow fear or division to break our spirit,” Obama said, then went on to try to conjure up the spirit of reform that electrified American politics during his election campaign.... MORE
