‘JV’ airs warning on return of US military bases to RP
By Charlie V. Manalo 02/09/2012San Juan Rep. Joseph Victor “JV” Ejercito yesterday warned of re-opening US military bases in the country, saying the Philippines will not benefit anything from doing such.
“We fought long and hard to oust the US bases in Subic and Olongapo City. To re-open the US bases or set up new bases anywhere in the country should be non-negotiable. Clearly, at this point, our country does not have much to gain from this strategic military and economic plan of the US,” said Ejercito, whose father, former President Joseph Estrada led the opposition to extending the US military bases agreement in 1990.
Ejercito made the statement over reports that the United States will be sending US Marines on rotation, sending most of them to the Philippines, Guam and Australia in line with strengthening US presence in the Asia Pacific region..... MORE
