Military peddles new ‘excuse’ for snubbing court orderAFP concocts NPA plan to free ‘Morong 43’By Mario J. Mallari 02/15/2010 After drawing flak for the non-presentation of the arrested health workers, baptized by the media as the “Morong 43,” before the Court of Appeals (CA) last Friday as ordered by the Supreme Court (SC), the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) yesterday came up with yet another excuse found to be incredible, to explain the military snubbing of the court habeas corpus order: There were reports of attempts by the New People’s Army (NPA) to rescue their arrested “comrades.” “We have been receiving information that there is really a possibility that the NPA would launch rescue operations because those arrested were high value targets. There is a possibility of an ambush,” said AFP spokesman Lt. Col. Romeo Brawner. The AFP said that among the arrested were NPA leaders, considered as “high-value targets,” holding positions in the national, regional and provincial level.
