In a recent announcement, Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Chairman Oscar Inocentes said no towing company has been given accreditation to operate along Edsa, in response to a shit-load of complaints received from drivers who have been victimized by extortionists masquerading as unscrupulous tow truck operators.

Only official MMDA tow trucks are authorized to dispose of stalled vehicles along said thoroughfare, Inocentes said.... MORE

According to media reports, such was the rating by a Commission on Elections (Comelec) official in conjunction with the trial performance of the by now infamous election machines.

“Almost perfect!” — this was said to be the triumphant hurrah of the said official on the occasion of a dry-run of some of them, here and there. At times, some counting machines did not even count. On occasions, a number of them jammed. There were those that were everything else except what they were supposed to be. Conclusion: The machines were “almost perfect.” Translation: No less than 82,000 “almost perfect” machines for the May 2010 automated national elections!... MORE

The girl, whose name means “Fairy of the Heavens,” was shopping in Peshawar with her uncle for a new pair of socks for the Muslim festival of Eid in November 2008 when tragedy struck.

Their car was travelling alongside a convoy of the paramilitary Frontier Constabulary. Mistaking them for potential suicide bombers, her father says, troops raked the vehicle with gunfire, shattering Laiba’s left leg.... MORE

The indefatigable Josefina Trinidad Lichauco has taken wing into the firmament, but it is impossible to rejoice over her reunion with her beloved husband Eddie in the bosom of the Father. It is, however, our great consolation that she chose Valentine’s Day to tell us not to grieve, but to be glad we have the power of love of country to vanquish the purveyors of electoral infamy. That was Josie: Friend, consoler and the ubiquitous moving spirit of the Concerned Citizens Movement. Ahh, it is impossible still not to mourn.

Come to think of it, I had always called him Gilby, not Gibo, not until after he launched his candidacy. The name Gibo must then be the “promdi” moniker that was strategically devised to identify with the vote-rich grass roots this young Harvard product, a man with a cosmopolitan flair who is bidding to be the country’s next president. Be that as it may, he exudes the incongruous persona of a black-tie jet-setter astride a carabao at the hustings. It is therefore evident that his one problem is whether the poor folk can see a savior in him. Sadly, he faces other setbacks among which, as underscored in a previous article, was his failure or refusal to duck under a kiss of death blown from Malacañang.... MORE
