As supplies begin to arrive, Haiti still lives in fear FEATURE 01/17/2010 PORT-AU-PRINCE — The crippled port of the Haitian capital has received its first supply ship since Tuesday’s killer earthquake — a boat carrying bananas and coal that was greeted with jubilation by desperate residents of the devastated city. A swarm of small boats surrounded the ship at the entrance to the harbor late Friday as it approached a crumbled pier with supplies from Jeremie, a Haitian town about 200 kilometers (130 miles) from Port-au-Price. Bananas will provide local residents with necessary food while coal will help boil water to avoid spread of disease. But the joyful event did little to change the overall grim situation..... Comeuppance for DoTC, LTO BLURBAL THRUSTS Louie Logarta 01/17/2010 The reason offered by apologists of Senator Noynoy Aquino for his snubbing of the latest debate among the “presidentiables” hosted by the Asian Institute of Management and the Makati Business Club, in conjunction with the Presidential Policy Forum on Philippine Credibility and Competitiveness in the World, was that he had an “important engagement” to attend to. Did I get that right, Butch Abad? The Noynoy no-show naturally disappointed many of his supporters in the so-called civil society sector which draws its strength from the Makati elite who were hugely responsible, together of course with the Church, for the success of Edsa 1 and Edsa 2 because it would have been a stellar opportunity for him to disprove persisting brickbats being propagated by the opposing political camps that he is overrated, unprepared and totally unqualified for the Malacañang job he aspires for..... Noynoy strikes again C.R.O.S.S.R.O.A.D.S Jonathan De la Cruz 01/17/2010 It’s strike two for LP presidential bet Sen. Noynoy Aquino. Even as the controversy over his earlier statements on the recent SWS survey that surveys can be bought in Quiapo and fellow presidentiable and Senate colleague Richard Gordon’s taunt about his track record and what he has done for Tarlac (I do not answer questions from a poll tailender) persists and is definitely putting his very character and stability in crisis under a cloud, he has once again opened himself for a deserved attack. This time an even more serious assault on his competence and, yes, his handling of the vast powers of the highest office of the land. What makes this latest outburst truly unfortunate if not contemptible is that the Tarlac solon directed it against the Supreme Court and its members which is of course a no-no in any other jurisdiction. ....
