Emergency powers C.R.O.S.S.R.O.A.D.S Jonathan De la Cruz 02/21/2010 It is well that opposition Rep. Rufus Rodriguez (PMP, Cagayan de Oro) was the one who had broached the idea of granting President Arroyo emergency powers to address the worsening power situation in Mindanao. In a meeting of the House energy committee last Thursday, Rodriguez urged Congress to hold a special session “exclusively to look into and resolve the looming crisis in Mindanao.” Not any other. Had an administration solon or the Palace itself brought that matter up upon receipt of the report of Energy Secretary Angie Reyes, it is likely that the usual critics would have raised a howl and proceeded to issue all kinds of dire predictions including the all too familiar “this is a prelude to a possible failure of election” and all that jazz. Well, if Congress does not act fast and we let the situation stay as is we will surely have failure in Mindanao. Maybe not a failure of election but certainly a failure of nerve resulting in rolling brownouts all over the island. Which would be tragic indeed.... Moderating greed Part 2 TABLETS OF STONE Larry Faraon, OP 02/21/2010 Moderate their greed.” We heard that before as then Neda Secretary Romulo Neri quoted Gloria Arroyo in the infamous ZTE-NBN mega anomaly Senate investigation. It was an abrupt counsel to the lions wanting a bite to the nation’s flesh. But as we have said before, you cannot moderate greed. Moderation is a morally righteous act, while greed per se is evil. The best counsel from Arroyo should have been for the lions to abandon their salivating avarice in view of the welfare of a people already drenched in poverty and corruption.  But the outgoing president may not be that gutsy toward her own husband and pals especially as alleged by whistle-blowers Joey de Venecia and Jun Lozada that she not only “is” part of the deal but “has” a part in the deal. ....
