What Earth says HE SAYS Aldrin Cardon 02/03/2010 I’m not sure if it was really all right for Sir Paul McCartney, a quarter of the Beatles whose music rocked the world even before man set foot on the moon, when he sent his love to aliens when he congratulated the Nasa for sending out their song “Across the Universe,” in an effort to make contact with extraterrestrial beings in the region of Polaris, or the North Star. The song was beamed in 2008, but it won’t be until the year 2439 when the Nasa message would reach its intended recipients, if there are any, or the effort and all the money spent for the endeavor would only prove futile. While this rubbernecker would like to stir a controversy by questioning the Nasa’s choice of a song (and why not the Carpenters’ “Calling occupants of interplanetary craft?), he is fascinated with man’s continued fascination with alien life form when man, himself, has veered away from such interest, as he had once shown enthusiasm with Apollo 11 sent three astronauts, from one of whom his name was taken from, to the moon.... Not the worst Senate C.R.O.S.S.R.O.A.D.S Jonathan De la Cruz 01/31/2010 Last Tuesday, a day after that tumul-tuous Senate session which saw some of our respected senators descend to the abyss throwing all kinds of innuendoes and gutter language at each other a lot of callers besieged our daily morning show Karambola over dwIZ asking why the Senate has gone this low and inquiring if it is true that this is the worst Senate we ever had. On the first question, we noted that the poisonous atmosphere prevailing in the Senate is a sad reflection of the state of our affairs, advising that this Senate has been the springboard for a lot of politically explosive inquiries on almost all subjects under the sun. We told our callers that it appears the Senate has taken its oversight (check and balance) functions to the extreme. This highly politicized operation became even more pronounced as the election fever caught on early last year. Where before the principal focus of Senate inquiry was on the foibles and malpractices of the Arroyo administration, many other targets got into play as the various parties and political groups maneuvered to get their operations in place. No need for forums TABLETS OF STONE Larry Faraon, OP 01/31/2010 So what’s wrong with delaying in answering a question in an open forum, as one ANC anchor would fault and pun President Joseph Estrada by saying that the former President took two minutes in answering a question from a presidential forum moderator. As a preacher, evangelist and speaker for hundreds of occasions from churches to symposiums, I have mastered the art of answering questions from the audience; and part of the technique and strategy is delaying in responding to the question, refusing to answer the question, or “Next question please” or “I’ll refer to this to some other more competent” or “Excuse me, but this line of questioning is out of topic or has double meaning” or “Please elaborate the question” or a humble admission, “Let me see what to make up with your question.” Communicators, including television broadcasters should know this. Watching presidential forums is not my cup of tea. I don’t really get much from it anyway. Formats or the discussion layouts are sometimes in total disarray, un-systematic. The manner of exposition and questioning are often times reduced to whatever semantics would cater to the moderators or organizers’ motives. Most often, the forums are so tainted with “media-matics” with subliminal or intentional bent for sarcasm, bias, witticism, levity and putting the subject into the spotlight when he is totally unprepared for it — a tried formula for showbiz programs or stand-up comedy bars!.... Citizens oppose towers to save environment SPECIAL FEATURE 01/31/2010 Dear Editor: I write to support local action groups now opposing construction of more condominiums in Metro Manila. Reports have recently appeared in leading newspapers of QC barangay residents opposing a condo project, and the formation of a group at Oriental Gardens Makati. In QC, the objection is to further increase traffic density as a threat to life, limb and amenity. In the Makati case, Federal Land has proposed to construct a third tower on what was previously marketed as a two-tower site. In opposing this project the residents have been picketing, leafleting and even using YouTube to warn off prospective buyers. They are also taking legal action. Why is this militancy spreading across Metro Manila? First, there is a sense that the interests-financial, environmental, social, and health of ordinary people are being trampled on by the large “developers.” A feeling of betrayal exists, a lack of participation in the important decisions affecting their lives — no consultation, no transparency and often what appear to be unfair, immoral practices. Second, no accountability. The institutions of the political order show little interest and take even less action to stop the devastation of the urban environment. This is more than the loss of some historic trees, however lamentable that is. The loss of open spaces has serious effects on us and our children, as does the air and noise pollution caused by increasing population density and motor vehicle traffic.
