\"Democracy at work”, was how the Palace described the guilty verdict of Chief Justice (CJ)Renato Corona. What… democracy, it’s politics no more no less. Impeachment is a process posing as a judicial process or using its mechanics but never demanding from the judges to render a final verdict based purely on evidential merit. The explanations on the guilty verdict by the senator-judges verged on mostly political and moral considerations, where the signing of the waiver by the CJ was praised to high heavens, where explicitly CJ was exculpated from ill-gotten wealth, where one or two senators even chorused apologies to the accused for rendering a guilty verdict and that “CJ was a good man.”
In fact, highly noticeable, beginning from Corona himself was when he kept on addressing the people of the Philippines in his defense statement and so are the senator-judges in their judgments. It sounded like a political campaign or moral recovery speech program!
Sen. Jinggoy Estrada was the only senator-judge who put on record as part of his statement his sincere compliments to the dexterous efforts of the presiding officer, Sen. Juan Ponce Enrile in bringing the process to its proper and constitutional conclusion. Indeed, there are other senators who should have rendered the same compliment..... MORE
