Senate probers scold DFA on Panamanian rape case
05/18/2012The government was helpless in keeping in detention the Panamanian rape suspect after he was found to be a holder of a diplomatic passport, Senate investigators were told yesterday.
But the lead prober, foreign relations committee chairman Sen. Loren Legarda, found this claim unacceptable, saying the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) could have sat on the issuance of a certificate affirming his status, having diplomatic immunity from criminal acts, rather than having acted with haste, thus allowing Erick Bairnals Schck to depart freely last week.
