UNITED NATIONS — The Palestinian campaign for statehood at the United Nations is a diplomatic bullet aimed as much at the United States as at Israel, according to many observers.
Any US veto of a Palestinian application for UN Security Council recognition could bring Palestinian-US tensions to a new peak following a year in which there has been virtually no progress in resolving the Middle East conflict.
US President Barack Obama is to meet Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly this week, which risks being overshadowed by the Palestinian bid for statehood.
