It’s bad enough that we are being tagged as the home of drug mules. Today, we are getting another yet another egregious distinction. Hardly have we gotten out of the oprobium associated with the death of the three Filipinos in China on charges of drug trafficking and the arrest and detention of scores more in China, Malaysia and Indonesia, among others, we are now facing another round of international condemnation. A recent International Labor Organization (ILO) report has advised that we have about 2.4 million children (15 years old and below) working under dangerous and exploitative conditions. This, despite our having signed an earlier covenant to end the worst forms of child labor five years from now by 2016. Foremost forms of such “dangerous and exploitative conditions” are those being performed by children in mining and other extractive industries, prostitution and even soldiery which in the eyes of ILO experts are sadly being imposed on millions of our children.....
