09/20/2010
Filipino journalists found an ally in a lawmaker when San Juan Rep. Joseph Victor “JV” Ejercito took the cause of newsmen against abuses and in getting better pay and working conditions.
Ejercito filed House Bill (HB) 3160 which seeks to protect the welfare of journalists by instituting a comprehensive benefits and compensation package for them, including exemption from travel tax, terminal fees and payment of hazard allowances.
The bill also provides the formulation of a Code of Profes-sional Conduct for Journalists.
Filed recently, the legislative measure also seeks to extend to journalists the freedom against interference and coercion.
