House prosecutors and their spokesmen are obviously using this impeachment trial of the Chief Justice, Renato Corona, as their stepping stone to the Senate, no different from some prosecutors and other anti-Erap congressmen during the impeachment of the then sitting president, Joseph Estrada.

But the way they have been engaging in really very low dirty tactics but being slowly found out by the public of their malicious play and their paucity of evidence along with their manufactured documents against the CJ, they may just be booed off by the voters in 2013, which is not too far away — campaign wise.

Just how dirty the prosecutors, and no doubt, Noynoy, have been playing the game, can be evidenced by the leak to the media of the so-called 45 properties they had charged were owned by the CJ, when it is now being bared that many of those alleged properties owned by Corona were not even in his name. Moreover, if the rules are to be adhered to, that list of properties cannot even be introduced in court, unless the House amends the impeachment complaint, which means that the Articles of Impeachment will have to be returned to the House for amendments, and the 188 congressmen will have to again vote on these amendments, after which, this would again be elevated to the Senate..... What’s missing (wrong) with the media coverage on the San Juan demolition

What’s missing (wrong) with the media coverage on the San Juan demolition

By JANESS ANN J. ELLAO
Bulatlat.com
We are in the age of information technology. But really, what kind of information is available to most Filipinos? With the corporate media , it’s hard to know if you are getting the whole truth or just a side of the story.

During the violent demolition of homes in Barangay Corazon de Jesus in San Juan City, my Facebook newsfeed and Twitter timeline have been filled with criticisms on how the media covered the said event. Among those who have been heavily criticized was Mike Enriquez, a GMA executive, primetime news anchor and radio commentator for one of the country’s biggest media conglomerate, GMA 7.

“They thought that it is the government’s responsibility to feed them, give them shelter while they do nothing,” Enriquez said in Filipino over his radio program at DZBB.

Other reporters dwelled on the fact that the residents, to begin with, were “illegal settlers.” Thus, their report implied that it’s okay to treat the residents of Corazon de Jesus like animals, destroy their homes and send them to remote relocation sites where life is more difficult. They are illegal settlers anyway. They are poor and don’t have the right to be choosy.

But Friday night was different. The news report was about the 3:00 p.m. deadline imposed by the local government for residents to leave the immediate vicinity. Some of the residents have accepted the relocation packages while majority have opted to rent rooms in nearby communities. Local government officials, in their television interviews, could not hide their satisfaction that the residents have left P. Narciso st., a narrow alley where they were forced to spend the night, “peacefully.”.... MORE

Any conflict on Iran is a direct threat to Russia’s security – Rogozin

The escalating conflict around Iran should be contained by common effort, otherwise the promising Arab Spring will grow into a “scorching Arab Summer,” says Dmitry Rogozin, Russia’s former envoy to NATO.

President Bashar al-Assad has issued a decree granting general amnesty for crimes committed during the Syrian uprising which started in March 2011, the official government news agency SANA reported on Sunday.

The amnesty reportedly covers those who took part in peaceful demonstrations, carried unlicensed weapons and those who have handed their weapons over to authorities before the end of January, as well as army deserters who fled their military service, but turn themselves in before January 31..... The emir of Qatar has become the first Arab leader to voice support for military intervention in Syria should the bloodshed continue there. Does that mean Doha is aligned with the West’s agenda in the region?

President Obama’s allies in the Democratic Party are pushing the approval of a law which would make life really tough for American firms that insist on “outsourcing” their call center operations.

Many may not be aware of it, but if the legislative measure — House Bill No. 3596 or the “Call Center and Consumers Protection Bill” filed last Dec. 7, 2011 by Representatives Tim Bishop (Democrat, New York), Mike Michaud (Democrat, Texas) and David Mckinley (Republican, West Virginia) — is passed by the US Congress, it would necessarily impact negatively on the Philippines’ burgeoning call center industry which in 2011 provided jobs for some 600, 000 workers and generated revenues amounting to some $8 billion. And what’s electric is that it is expected to grow at a 20-percent rate for the next five years.

Said industry is ranked second only to the overseas Filipino worker sector which accounted for about $14 billion in foreign exchange remittances for the same period..... MORE

Since man learned how to talk, since he started to speak, and since he ventured in communicating with others, he slowly but surely came to know the following realities through personal experience: The difference between an utter truth and a downright lie.

The force of a lie, the more it approaches the truth. The futility of a lie, the farther it is from the truth. These rather simple thoughts and plain realities have more relevance and acquire greater interest when signal issues, basic questions and/or fundamental disputes, come to fore in the ethico-social arena.

Needless to say, the now on-going disturbing bout between the Chief Executive vs the Chief Justice (CJ) is a big issue, a key question, a core dispute with both intensive effect and extensive repercussion in this Republic that constitutionally subscribes to the separation and equality of the Legislative, Executive and Judicial Branches of government..... I really don’t know if upgrading the terminology from “squatters” to “informal settlers” really changed the culture of squatting in most of our urban areas. Or it would seem that the shift from the negative to the positive nomenclature only encouraged further potential squatters to “rise and fight” for their “constitutional right of shelter” and habitation. However, since the inception of the social problem of squatting has already skipped my memory, being a protracted social ugly horn protruding from an otherwise bullish urban development, squatting has become a culture. Indeed, it has become a choice.

Quezon City Mayor Herbert Bautista forwarded a rustic solution of “balik-probinsiya” to the informal settlers in his turf only to find out that the urban squatters are of the third and even fourth generation whose rural roots and living are just simple stories to tell from their old folks. These third generation squatters have already been “rooted” in the shanties their forefathers have illegally built in unoccupied or idle spaces, atop esteros, along river banks or even on easements of formal residences and street pavements. With a pejorative encouragement from the politics of patronage and an aggressive tap from the leftists and pro-poor advocates and a doting government’s regular dole-outs and inefficient handling of the social nuisance, protracted squatting or sheltering informally has become almost a choice..... It seems the revelations over Chief Justice Renato Coronas alleged excessive wealth, including the list of supposed 45 titles to his properties, were the handiwork of the so-called Kaibigan, Kaklase and Kabarilan (KKK) (friends, classmates and shooting buddies) network of President Aquino.

The use of the Executive Departments resources, particularly by the presidents classmates and friends to backstop Malacaangs agenda in ousting Corona, was revealed by a source in the SC who declined to be identified, saying the recent supposed lists of documents on properties owned by Coronas family and released by the Land Registration Authority (LRA), an agency under the Department of Justice (DoJ), were done with a lot of help from a close friend of Aquino who now heads the agency..... At the weekly Kapihan sa Annabel’s, Batangas Rep. Hermilando Mandanas said it was rather unfortunate for the administration which had been espousing its program of strengthening of LGUs but still continues to deprive them of their entitlement as provided for in the Local Government Code of 1992.

Abad cannot simply argue, as a reply to Gloria’s treatise of “It’s the economy, student” referring to her one time student at the Ateneo, Noynoy, that the nine years of Gloria was a “huge failure” because “she turned her back on the her big opportunity (as) we ended up suffering from those years of very bad governance.”

“Repeatedly the performance of her government — the economic and political — has been exposed as a huge failure over the past nine-and-a-half years,” he added.

Church leaders join efforts to bring Palparan to justice

“We are watching very closely. The present administration must demonstrate that the Philippines has turned the page and a new chapter where freedom and justice prevail has begun.” – Beaconsfield United Church of Canada
By RONALYN V. OLEA
Bulatlat.com
MANILA –Church leaders have called on their faithful to help in hunting down retired Army Maj. Gen. Jovito Palparan Jr.
Palparan, charged with kidnapping and serious illegal detention in connection with the disappearance of the two missing University of the Philippines (UP) students Karen Empeño and Sherlyn Cadapan, remains in hiding after a court ordered his arrest last Dec. 20. A P1-million bounty has been offered for information leading to Palparan’s arrest.
Speaking in a press conference, Bishop Reuel Norman Marigza, general secretary of the United Church of Christ of the Philippines (UCCP) said their Church has also experienced the anguish of losing pastors and lay leaders in Palparan’s ‘gruesome litany of death.’
Marigza cited the killing of Isaias Manano, Rev. Edison Lapuz and the disappearance of Pastor Andy Pawican and blamed the ‘not-so-mysterious death squads that shadowed Palparan wherever and whenever he was assigned.
Manano, son of a UCCP pastor and the local church’s youth leader, was gunned down on April 28, 2004 in Calapan City, Mindoro Oriental. At that time, Palparan was assigned in the province as then commanding officer of the 204th Infantry Battalion.

Lapuz, meanwhile, was killed by motorcycle-riding men on May 12, 2005 in San Isidro, Leyte. Palparan was then the commanding officer of the 8th Infantry Division, which covers Eastern Visayas.
On May 21, 2006, Pawican, then assigned at the UCCP outreach congregation in Pantabangan, Nueva Ecija, was taken by soldiers of the 48th Infantry Battalion for questioning. He was killed. His months-old daughter, who was with him the day he was taken, was returned with his blood on her dress. At that time, Palparan was the commanding officer of the Philippine Army’s 7th Infantry Division based in Fort Magsaysay in Laur, Nueva Ecija.
In the same vein, Rev. Fr. Lorenzo Anievas of the Iglesia Filipina Independiente and governor general of the National Priest Organization, related how their members became victims of violence perpetrated by state agents.
Anievas cited the killing of Fr. William Tadena and Supreme Bishop Alberto Ramento, both of whom were staunch supporters of Hacienda Luisita farm workers.
“If they can kill leaders of the Church, what else could they do to ordinary people who only fight for land, jobs and the right to a decent life?” Anievas said..... MORE

Slowly but surely, it is being discovered by the public that the impeachment move against Supreme Court (SC) Chief Justice Renato Corona is nothing more than an insidious ploy by Noynoy, his yellow mob and his prostitutes in the House of Representatives, to embarrass, harass, demonize the CJ to force his resignation.

From the start, it was evident that the impeachment proceedings were railroaded, and no doubt, this was quickly signed without as much as reading the complaint, by 188 congressmen, most of whom were bribed by the Malcaang tenant, who has been moving heaven and earth to oust Corona and replace him with Justice Antonio Carpio, with the end view of getting the landmark Hacienda Luisita ruling overturned with the entry of a Noynoy-appointed CJ.

All that demonizing by Noynoy and his allies is hardly being done for any claimed transparency or reform in the Judiciary, but only to serve his, and his familys haciendas interests as well as his control over the high court..... MORE

The domestic use of stealth drones to survey America from the skies is no joke. The Department of Homeland Security has acknowledged that the US government has used the planes on the home front for years, but why and how is largely unknown.

Never mind the budding war between America and Iran. A skirmish could be coming a lot closer to home and it might even be as centrally located as your own city. In only two years, tensions have grown greatly between the upper and lower classes.
The results from a recent survey out of the Pew Research Center reveal that 66 percent of the adults studied believe that there are either “very strong” or “strong” conflicts existing between America’s elite and impoverished, a statistic that has skyrocketed in recent years. Between 2009 and 20011, the proportion of those that sense conflicts exist as such between the class groups grew by 19 percentage points. While less than half of Americans fearing a fight brewing at the dawn of the Obama administration, today two-out-of-three Americans feel that there is a strong conflict between both extremes of society..... By MARYA SALAMAT

MANILA — In the immediate aftermath of a landslide that had killed 36 (with unidentified number still declared as missing) in the gold-rich Pantukan, Compostela Valley, vultures have swooped down on the unearthed dead and their families. Armed with high-powered rifles, they are forcibly implementing the Aquino government’s order to drive the surviving small-scale miners and their families away from the rich mining area.
President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III has done an Arroyo and blamed the small-scale miners and victims for “dangerous mining.” On countless occasions, he has also previously expressed preference for large-scale, foreign mining companies. But his immediately issued order to have the said rich mining area vacated by the poor, supposedly for their safety, would only benefit more the large mining companies who have been operating in the area and raring to dig into the lands, according to various critics.
The mountainous area of Pantukan town is host not only to small-scale miners who eke out a living by digging small tunnels in search of gold and copper, but, in recent years, also to various large-scale mining companies who have reportedly been pushing the workers and operators of small-scale mines away from the area, long before the January 5 tragedy.

Residents, rescue workers and miners from nearby companies dig on mud, rocks and debris that buried a poor mining community in Pantukan, Compostela Valley, killing at least 36 people. (Photo by Karlos Manlupig / bulatlat.com)
Operating in Pantukan are large mining firms such as the Nationwide Development Corporation (NADECOR) and the Napnapan Mineral Resources Inc. that have been carrying out large-scale operations within a government concession of more than 4,900 hectares.
The US-owned Russel Mining and Minerals Inc. (an affiliate of the US global mining company St. Augustine) has also been operating a 4,000-hectare concession in the areas of Lumanggang, Chogdan, Gumayan, Biasung, Panganasun and Diat, also in Pantukan.
Russell Mining reportedly maintains a big number of armed personnel in Mindanao to protect its exploration area and the Americans who run its $30-million investments over the 792 million tons of gold and copper deposits.
To secure Russell Mining and other big large-scale mining firms, the 10th Infantry Division-Philippine Army-Armed Forces of the Philippines also reportedly stationed its 71st Infantry Battalion in Pantukan.
Xstrata, one of the three biggest mining corporations operating in the Philippines, is reportedly aiming also to operate an open pit mining in four provinces of Mindanao, according to the environmentalist group Kalikasan-PNE.
The Compostela Valley mountains are considered to be among the biggest repositories of untapped gold and copper ore.?
Hypocritical, despicable treatment of small-scale miners

Malacañang described the Pantukan tragedy as “totally unacceptable.” But it is actually the Aquino government that’s being blamed by many for the tragedy.
“The US-Aquino regime has shamelessly caused the January 5 Pantukan landslides. The tragedy has put to the fore the disastrous policy of the US-Aquino regime that favors large-scale mining like that of US-owned Russell Mining, and the dislocation of small-scale miners in the area,” said Anvil Guinto, spokesperson of the New People’s Army operating in Southern Mindanao.

"Small-scale mining is not the only cause, and is not even the biggest cause, of the destruction of Pantukan’s erstwhile forest lands… large-scale commercial logging operations since the 50s and large-scale mining operations of the past 30 years have massively denuded the mountains of Compostela Valley.”..... Ignorance is bliss. Knowledge is dangerous. The less people know, the better for their own comfort and peace of mind. The more secrets are kept by their government, the more tranquil are the citizens. Such erratic principles and convictions can be considered as the composite premise of the new “Folly of Information” legislative agendum.

In other words, make the government all-knowing. Keep the people altogether dumb and naive. Let their government do the worrying, attend to everything, resolve anything. What people do not know, cannot hurt them. Let their government have full charge of running their country, and thereby free them from thinking and acting out of their individual selves and tiny personal worlds..... MORE

Cordero and Palparan

DIE HARD III
Herman Tiu Laurel
01/13/2012
Jovito Palparan is supposed to be the “butcher,” “serial murderer” and “berdugo” accused of hunting, killing or making countless communists and New People’s Army (NPA) adherents “disappear” through the years. Nobody as yet epitomizes the notion of human rights violators in the Philippines more than the retired army general. In fact, a reward for information leading to his capture in connection with the reported torture and disappearance of UP students Sherlyn Cadapan and Karen Empeño has now been raised to P1 million. But, as the courts have yet to try the case, howls of protests against his “conviction by publicity” and “demonization” have also been raised by certain quarters in the military.

Indeed, Palparan, with his beady eyes and sharply angled, bony mien, strikes many people with instinctive horror. And this has led to nothing short of a propaganda boon to the anti-military Left and human rights groups.

Meanwhile, on the other end of the spectrum, a fellow named Danilo “Danny” Cordero, a far lesser known historical figure in Philippine political and military history, is no less controversial — that is, if his supposed deeds were to be ventilated as much as Palparan’s alleged atrocities.

Danny, according to various accounts from many former leaders of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) and the NPA that I have heard myself, was deceased — or should I say, killed — in the communist purges of the late 1980s. Some say this was done to silence the history of what really transpired at Plaza Miranda — a bombing that killed nine and injured 95 others, including many Liberal Party candidates except Ninoy Aquino.

Accounts that trace Danny’s liquidation to the highest leadership of the CPP-NPA have been found credible by the likes of former Sen. Jovito Salonga (who was one of the bombing victims in 1971), especially as these come from Cordero’s former comrades, Ruben Guevarra and Ariel Almendral.

As soldiers trained to fight those deemed by their higher political and military authorities as enemies, Palparan and Cordero certainly share many things in common. Both apparently carried out their duties with unquestioning zeal and dedication. Both risked their lives in the endeavors they chose and followed the dictum, “Theirs not to make reply / Theirs not to reason why / Theirs but to do and die,” from Alfred, Lord Tennyson’s The Charge of the Light Brigade (which won me in my youth a first prize in declamation at St. Stephen’s High School).

Yet, both of them share also one tragic commonality that highlights their shared dilemma: The masters they served later on turned out to be their tormentors and executioners after the need to cover up the indefensible evils, which they were ordered to commit, became greater. And this is a scenario that should make all combatants from all sides pause and think.

While the CPP-NPA and Jose Ma. Sison have persistently denied any responsibility for the Plaza Miranda bombing to gain a propaganda coup against Marcos, testimonies from former CPP-NPA members themselves (including some personal friends) provide the preponderance of proof.

We had to establish the basis for the charge against Cordero in order to draw another comparison: Did Danny Cordero’s killing of nine totally innocent individuals, including a five-year-old child, with the two grenades he lobbed at Plaza Miranda constitute less of a crime than the disappearance of two UP students, which investigators and activists attribute to Palparan and his men?

While the Commission on Human Rights and the Department of Justice have called Palparan to account, shouldn’t they also, even posthumously, formally investigate the Plaza Miranda-Cordero case?

Bringing justice to victims of human rights violations is good for as long as authorities remain fair and consistent. Thus, this demand for consistency brings us to so many cases that have not been taken up with any zeal, like the killings at Hacienda Luisita, where, in the most recent instance, 14 farm workers from the United Luisita Workers Union and Central Azucarera de Tarlac and their kin (including two children) were killed.

Yes, there is pressure to safeguard human rights via the West and the US’ support of many Left-leaning human rights groups in the Third World. But these Western human rights bodies should also look fairly at the charges from other countries, such as those coming from Russia’s Foreign Ministry that lambast Guantanamo abuses and innocent death row executions, or the North Atlantic Treaty Organization’s civilian killings in Libya, ad nausea.

Cordero, once touted as one of the best of the CPP-NPA cadres, was sacrificed at the altar of a failed communist revolution. Palparan is on the run and may soon have to face an ignominious surrender to the government he served in the anti-communist cause.

Palparan’s life was never easy, I know. One of our family drivers, who once drove for the man, tells us of his elaborate daily security rigors — and it’s not a normal life that anyone would want. And yet, he is now being sacrificed at another altar — the altar of human rights, which every regular human being is required to uphold, except for those who are on top of the totem pole or the food chain. In the case of the Philippines, its chief violator is its so-called Big Brother, the US, which supplies arms to our Armed Forces while channeling various legal foundation and covert funds to the Left, the Right, as well as the Church, in tandem with the oligarchs who run our politics and government.

As I have said on my cable TV show with (ret.) Commodore Rex Robles, Filipinos should debate to the death but never kill each other (except maybe those nasty foreign interlopers). Until we learn this, there will be more “useful idiots” sacrificed at the altar of causes and crusades that serve only those who divide and rule.

Slowly but surely, even before the Senate court opens, a chief impeachment complaint against Chief Justice Renato Corona is turning out a dud and a mere spin of offenses that would be hard to prove. And this is an issue not unique to the impeached Supreme Court (SC) head and should require an overhaul of the entire system on the disclosure of wealth of public officials, if indeed this administration is dead serious about it.

Corona will be placed under scrutiny for his alleged failure to disclose a certain property and that he violated constitutional provisions on the full disclosure of his Statement of Assets, Liabilities and Net Worth (SALn) every year..... MORE

The US's Guantanamo Bay is marking its 10th anniversary, despite Obama’s repeated promises to close the infamous prison. Human rights groups and the inmates themselves are organizing events to mark the occasion and respond to the broken promises.

Guantanamo detainees are marking the anniversary of their imprisonment with a peaceful three-day demonstration. Starting on Tuesday some of the prisoners are refusing to return to their cells for the nightly lockdown and are attempting to sleep in the recreation areas, while others are refusing food, the Washington Post reports..... US troops defile dead Afghans on camera

An eye-opening video clip that made it online Wednesday may cause a scandal on par with what erupted with the Abu Ghraib photographs of 2004. Now US Marines have been caught on film - urinating on dead Afghans.

A 40-second excerpt of the clip has managed to made its web to the Web and in it viewers can watch four US Marines on patrol in Afghanistan allegedly urinating on the corpses of deceased Afghan men. It is unclear of the victims’ identities in this incident, but according to a note included with the uploaded file, the US servicemen were members of the Marine Scout Sniper Team 4 and the 3rd Battalion 2nd Marines from Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. The group was dispatched to the northern Helmand Province in Afghanistan during the summer of 2011..... MORE

In Ilonggo, that quote “daw sa mga bulag kag tando-tando sila, makahuluya” means “They are like lemmings. How embarrassing” which is a kind of supreme insult to those who still have a modicum of self-respect left in their persons. This was how Iloilo City Councilor Plaridel Nava, a lawyer, described the 188 congressmen who signed the rushed impeachment complaint of Chief Justice Renato Corona during a heated discussion on the subject over the popular radio-TV program Reklamo Publiko last Dec. 18..... Terror charade continues, Palace says full alert stays

By Fernan J. Angeles and Mario Mallari 01/11/2012

A day after admitting that no clear threat existed during the Black Nazarene feast procession and that the government was merely exercising precaution on a possible terror attack, Malacaang yesterday said it is not lifting a full security alert level on Metro Manila along with Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin insisting on a terror plot that he described as not an ordinary threat and which security forces have very reliable information on it.

He claimed the group behind the alleged terror plot disappeared after President Aquino made the announcement and blew the lid on the plot..... MORE

House prosecutors may just find their charges against Supreme Court Chief Justice collapsing, one by one.
Even before the impeachment trial formally commences, the House prosecutors have already lost round one of the battle after the Commission on Audit (CoA) cleared Chief Justice Renato Corona from any wrongdoing in the controversial Judiciary Development Fund (JDF) which is one of the charges in the impeachment complaint lodged against the CJ.

In its audit findings on the manner by which the high court spent the 2010 JDF collection, CoA belied claims by 188 complainant-congressmen that Corona had prevented state auditors from examining the way the JDF was disbursed..... MORE

Crisis in Iran may spark fuel rationing in RP, says DoE

By Pat C. Santos 01/11/2012
Rationing of fuel supply in the country will happen if the ongoing tension in the Middle East, particularly in Iran, results in the closure of the Strait of Hormuz which serves as a major passageway for oil tankers, according to the Department of Energy (DoE).

Iran’s threat of a blockade on the strait alone has already caused major concerns in the international oil market and was the chief cause of the jump in prices during the first week of 2012.

“Oil prices rose higher in the first trading week of 2012 driven by heightened concerns over Iran’s threat to close the Strait of Hormuz, the strategic waterway where one-sixth of the world’s oil pass daily, should economic sanctions limit, or cut off, Iranian Oil exports,” the DoE’s latest oil monitoring report said.....
