Still doing movies as if movies were still movies NO HOLDS BARRED Armida Siguion-Reyna 03/09/2010 And of course I mean Hollywood, in the good old US of A, and if you’re wondering where I’m coming from, well, the 82nd Academy Awards is going on as I write. It’s such a welcome respite from the Manny Villar ads airing in all media, so please, can we talk about this muna? The mind is clear, but the body is almost totally dependent on a cane; uneven flooring in most of our new movie theaters have altogether stopped me from going to the cinemas. And since I had long reverted to watching films on TV in the privacy of my bedroom, where on cable there is the pleasure of replays and on DVD, the magic of rewind, I didn’t know that there were 10 nominees slugging it out for this year’s Oscars Best Picture: Avatar, The Blind Side, District 9, An Education, Inglourious Basterds, Precious (based on the novel Push by Sapphire), A Serious Man, the animated Up, which is totally different from Up in the Air and The Hurt Locker.... Hoaxes and conspiracy theories AN OUTSIDERS VIEW Ken Fuller 03/09/2010 Weeks ago this outsider, along with thousands of others, received an e-mail claiming that a lavish mansion in Salt Lake City — which, the accompanying photographs made clear, could only have been purchased by an extravagantly wealthy but tasteless person — was the property of none other than Sen. Manuel Villar. At the time, I filed it away in the mental compartment labeled “Questionable” and thought no more about it. Then I received it again. And again. The cheerleaders of other “presidentiables” were obviously making sure that no one missed this latest sensational exposure of the candidate the polls have consistently shown as being in second place to Noynoy Aquino, with the gap closing. Was I surprised last week, when a contrary e-mail arrived exposing the original as a hoax? Not really. It turns out that the photographs had been used in 2008, when it was claimed that they depicted the mansion of Zimbabwe’s Robert Mugabe. Prior to that, the same hoax had been directed at Pakistan’s Pervais Musharraf, former Nigerian ruler Ibrahim Babangida, Bollywood star Shahrukh Khan, and even the Health secretary of Azerbaijan!... Nacionalista Party’s brain trust as well as other political analysts are asking why NP presidential candidate Manny Villar suffered a big drop of 6 percent in the latest Pulse Asia survey. The consensus among advertising executives is that his huge TV advertising has reached a saturation point. The drop also gives traction to the charge of overspending and a crude attempt to buy the presidency. This, in turn, leads to the question of how the billions he is spending on his campaign will be recovered. AFP casualties high. Contrary to claims of GMA and the AFP leadership that the NPAs are on the wane, the rebels inflicted heavy losses on the government forces over the weekend in Oriental Mindoro, Negros Occidental and Compostela Valley.
