Everyone knows that in a country like the Philippines, those who have a hold on power will most likely use their influence to twist things in their favor. The lines between duty (as in “responsibility”) and duty (as in “tax” or “payment”) are usually blurred, as very often public servants fall into the quagmire of corruption and immorality, where they end up expecting people to thank them for what they signed up to do as their job in the first place!

And this is why we have leaders — from the smallest barangay to the highest post in the national level — who make it a point to display every measly little project they have on garish posters and streamers, or painted on walls, lamp posts and bridges, further “uglifying” the metro.... MORE

Despite the many maneuvers and alleged legal technicalities raised by political allies of Sen. Manuel Villar Jr. in the Senate in a bid to kill the Senate committee of the whole (Scow) report that finds him guilty of ethical misconduct and conflict of interest on the C-5 road extension project, along with coup talks, Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile yesterday succeeded in steering the floor debates on the Senate report that calls for the censure of Villar.

Enrile’s sponsorship of Scow Report No. 780, as expected, was met with objections from Villar’s partisans in the minority bloc, as they tried to put up a good fight to prevent the report from being discussed in plenary.... MORE

As the Senate committee of the whole (Scow) tackles its report on the C-5 controversy which found Sen. Manuel Villar guilty of unethical conduct, the Nacionalista Party presidential candidate said he will not be attending that session, since it is all about politics, and not about the truth.

He was quoted as saying: “Why should I face them? I don’t see any relevance on the truth. I have answered the issues on the floor and I have granted more than a hundred interviews. It’s on the Web site, and I have also placed an advertisement regarding that.”          MORE

In the end, we may just be better off going back to manual polls, with an automated counting of the votes, since speed is the major factor being argued by the Commission on Elections (Comelec) in favor of automated polls, to minimize electoral fraud.

In every election, it has been proved that the massive cheating is hardly done at the precinct level, since the count is witnessed by many voters and watchers. But once the count leaves the precinct level and goes on to the municipal and city levels, this is where the padding of votes takes place. Then another bigger padding of the votes again takes place in the provincial level...... MORE
