Cruz 01/24/2010 The January 2010 open letter written by a group of Filipino Lay Catholics and addressed to the bishops, priests and religious of the Church in the Philippines, cannot but draw the attention and appreciation of its readers for the following reasons: First, it is written with due respect, not to mention its tone of sincerity and candor. Second, it amply manifests the genuine regard and appreciation of the writers toward the mission and pursuant ministry of the addressees. Third, it truly demonstrates the great concern and love of the same writers for their country long since besieged with a good number of big errant local and foreign character causing formidable social problems. Economic (science) fiction on TV COMMENT 01/24/2010 How TV works is an interesting economics question. Many shows are “free” to their audiences, and yet the TV networks make money because of advertising. Of course, the ads will have “reach” power only if the programming catches a large-enough audience. One especially successful show is Pinoy Big Brother (PBB), which is said to be a “reality” show because the “stars” in it play themselves and not fictional characters. Still, it seems that a fictional kind of self-indulgence infuses PBB. Its housemates apparently have to do some cooking and cleaning to earn their keep, but that seems to be it for the observance of the dismal no-free-lunch law of economics. The show otherwise generously serves up the neuroses of the Pinoy post-generation X. Recently, a besotted young female obsessed about her date with a male celebrity, of course at the prodding of Big Brother, who godlike grants or withholds wishes..... 2nd National Congress of the Clergy TABLETS OF STONE Larry Faraon, OP 01/24/2010   Tomorrow around seven to eight thousand bishops and priests shall gather at the World Trade Center to commence a five-day congress of the clergy. Last year’s congress also was a success but this year is more significant, being the Year of Priests for the entire Catholic Church. Preacher for the Papal Household, Rev. Fr. Raneiro Cantalamesa, OFM Capuchin, a frequent visitor to the Philippine Church, is here to keynote the congress with five conferences. The Philippine Church hierarchy shall be there in full force together with the Papal Nuncio, the little pope in the country, Most Rev. Edward Joseph Adams will be celebrating the opening Eucharistic celebration and delivering the special message of Pope Benedict XVI.
