Lawmaker urges public utility drivers to reciprocate by ensuring passengers’ safety
03/25/2012In the wake of the continued rise in fuel prices, House committee on good government and public accountability chairman and Iloilo Rep. Jerry Treñas yesterday lauded the efforts of the national government to mitigate the plight of some 100,000 public utility drivers through direct subsidy and tax discounts for spare parts but at the same time urged them to reciprocate by ensuring the safety of their passengers.
Apart from reckless driving, various forms of mechanical breakdowns due to improper vehicle maintenance are among the leading causes of vehicular accidents, many of which have claimed the lives of many people, Treñas noted.
“Proper vehicle maintenance should be a prerequisite for securing a franchise to operate a public transport system. Public transport operators have the utmost obligation to protect the safety of their passengers,” Treñas said..... MORE
