UN official concerned over diplaced Pinoys caught in strife-torn Mindanao
By Michaela P. del Callar 11/25/2011A senior United Nations official yesterday expressed deep concern over the plight of Filipinos displaced by armed hostilities in strife-torn Mindanao and urged the Philippine government and the Muslim rebels currently locked in peace negotiations, to protect them from armed conflict.
Catherine Bragg, deputy Emergency Relief Coordinator and UN Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, who completed her mission to the Philippines yesterday, was appalled at the living conditions of the thousands of refugees affected by the war. Bragg also said she is worried over the condition of those who have been displaced by the severe floods this year.
“I am concerned by the impact of cycles of displacement. The needs of vulnerable people in Mindanao are complex, and we must continue to address them through a concerted effort,” Bragg said..... MORE
