‘Inappropriately castigating Globe’

Dear Editor:
We refer to the column of Mr. Jesse Bacon II “Man at the Market” published in The Daily Tribune on July 12, 2011. Referring to the pending PLDT-Digitel consolidation, Mr. Bacon inappropriately castigates Globe to be in opposition to the deal, “not on moral grounds but because Globe lost to Smart in its own bid to buy Sun Cellular.”
We wish to point out that Mr. Bacon’s comments sound like a tired refrain, devoid of objectivity and basis, and without any regard to the numerous news write-ups covering all parties’ positions on the issue. Here are the points to set the record straight:
1. Globe is gravely concerned about the resulting implications of this deal for the industry and the consumers. Notwithstanding the recent hearings being conducted by the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) on the joint application of PLDT and Digitel, Globe has requested the regulatory bodies and the government to review the implications of the deal which would give the PLDT Group monopoly of the industry with 70 percent market share.....
