Mubarak says resignation will entail chaos
02/05/2011Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak said he wants to leave office, but feared there will be chaos if he resigns now, as anti-government protesters massed in Cairo for an 11th day of demonstrations aimed at putting an end to his 30-year rule.
The beleaguered Egyptian leader said he was “fed up with being president and would like to leave office now, but cannot... for fear that the country would sink into chaos,” ABC News’ Christiane Amanpour said, after interviewing Mubarak.
Mubarak, who has vowed not to stand in September elections, has come under increasing pressure from the United States and the West to step down immediately.
But he said he had told US President Barack Obama “you don’t understand the Egyptian culture and what would happen if I step down now.”.... MORE
