Mindanao solons vow to oppose bid to defer ARMM polls

Several congressmen from Mindanao are up in arms over a proposed bill seeking to postpone the elections in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) scheduled this coming August.

Maguindanao Rep. Simeon Datumanong questioned the legal ground of House Bill (HB) 3542 entitled “An Act Resetting the Regular Elections for Elective Officials of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao to Coincide with the General Elections to be held on the Second Monday of May 2013.”

Authored by Rep. Pangalian Balindong, HB 3542 seeks to postpone the elections scheduled on the second Monday of August 2011 to May 2013 to coincide with the mid-term general elections.

HB 3542 stipulates that all incumbent elected officials of the ARMM shall continue to hold office in a “holdover capacity” until their successors shall have been duly elected..... MORE
