IMPOSSIBLE PROMISES REVEAL DESPERATION

Stop regime of lies, Erap tells poll rivals

By Gerry Baldo

Do not sacrifice the truth in exchange for political gains, former President Joseph Estrada advised his rivals who he said were merely telling people what they wanted to hear to get ahead in the surveys.

“Do not lie or make impossible and empty promises only to get ahead in the campaign. It is unfair to the people.” This was the advice given by presidential candidate Estrada yesterday to other presidential candidates in interviews in Quezon province where he was on his third campaign sortie since the start of the campaign season.

“I won in 1998 and I am confident that we will again because the people know that it is Erap who is sincere and that I tell the truth,” Estrada said in the local dialect to reporters.

Estrada’s spokesman Margaux Salcedo said President Erap does not believe in just telling people what they want to hear, like what candidates who are losing momentum or are miserably low in the surveys are doing.

“Just telling people what they want to hear is a sign of desperation and of wanting to win at all costs,” she added.... MORE

Edsa II rectification in order EDITORIAL 02/21/2010

Edsa II rectification in order

The recantations and retractions former President Joseph Estrada had collected over the years involving Edsa II that robbed him of the presidency and seated Gloria Arroyo in power would be enough reason for the reopening of the plunder case that convicted him and was feebly based on insider trading and his supposed gains from the illegal numbers game jueteng. In truth, there really was no evidence presented by the prosecution of these two charges against Estrada. Besides, plunder refers to public funds. Neither the BW stocks nor jeuteng can be considered public funds.

To say that the arrest, trial and conviction of Estrada were not politically motivated would be a big lie.

The most recent Edsa II personality to seek Estrada’s forgiveness was former Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) chairman Perfecto Yasay whose testimonies were claimed to be key to the insider trading allegations on the BW Resources stocks against Estrada. The Sandiganbayan ruling against Estrada used insider-trading as a principal basis for the plunder case to justify his being incarcerated for six and a half years after the 2001 power grab.

But even as Yasay was captured on video stating that he had been used by those who wanted Estrada deposed, which was why he was apologizing to Estrada, Yasay recanted his apology a few days later, perhaps due to the same forces who had used him to paint Estrada black. Just goes to show one how worthless Yasay’s testimony during his impeachment, and now a recantation of that apology is.... MORE

Surveys, surveys FRONTLINE Ninez Cacho-Olivares 02/21/2010

Surveys, surveys

Does anyone still believe in these so-called presidential surveys? Or perhaps the better question would be, doesn’t anyone realize that the surveys are clearly being manipulated and all meant to generate that perception that one frontrunner has pulled away in surveys, or that another frontrunner is statistically tied or two points higher than the other frontrunner?

The Yellow TV network released the findings of a survey, obviously commissioned by the Liberal Party standard bearer Noynoy Aquino, which showed him regaining the lead from Nacionalista Party’s Manny Villar by about 11 percentage points.

The survey was reportedly conducted between Jan. 28 and Feb. 3, with 3,000 respondents, or just about a week after the other surveys, such as the Social Weather Stations (SWS), Pulse Asia and the Manila Standard Today ended their survey field work, whose results and timing were fairly questionable and obviously meant to show the leap of one presidential candidate, despite a controversial issue fought in the Senate.... ‘Those whom the gods wish to destroy... they first make mad’ ENQUIRY Demaree J. B. Raval 02/21/2010

‘Those whom the gods wish to destroy... they first make mad’

That statement — attributed to Euripides (c. 480 BC) in reference to those who had become crazed by power — suspiciously applies to the present-day handlers of the presidential bid of Noynoy Aquino.

The handlers have acted arrogantly with the thought that the presidency is theirs for the taking. They had better perish that thought by now.

In the afterglow of the death of Cory Aquino last year, all too suddenly Noynoy was thrust into the limelight, and the Liberal Party (LP) grabbed him as its standard bearer, over the well-prepared and definitely more qualified Mar Roxas. That was a decision made in a fit of madness.

Other seizures of madness followed.... MORE
