The Aquino administration is definitely all hammer and tongs in its effort against tax evasion and smuggling, that is at least in press statements, since up to now there is not one charged by both the Bureau of Customs (BoC) and the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) that can be classified a big fish and it is approaching a month after Noynoy and his shock economic team promised to present a major catch. The press releases though were always impressive as Noynoy keeps promising an untouchable crook or crooks falling into his administration’s widened fishnet and lately, Finance Secretary Cesar Purisima has been saying that financial papers of rice traders are being reviewed, implying a crackdown on the dreaded rice cartel of the past administration. What it has been passing off as a big fish thus far was an owner of a pawnshop chain that attained notoriety because of his owning a Lamborghini sports car while worming his way out of tax payments for the past seven years.
