With a proviso in the Fair Elections Act now supposed to be in force and effect, and with the Commission on Elections (Comelec) being the body to implement the law requiring celebrities in mass media to resign or take a leave of absence if they wish to keep on endorsing candidates during the election period, at least two presidential candidates, along with their celebrity endorsers and some print columnists and radio-TV talking heads, are up in arms over this poll proviso, giving out all sorts of arguments, a lot of which hinge on a misplaced sense of freedom. One presidential bet who makes use of TV and movie stars’ endorsement of his candidacy said the ban is unfair since celebrities are also Filipinos and have the right to choose their leaders. No one argues about that part. But this freedom to choose their leader comes in the form of their vote cast during election day, not through endorsing candidates....
