The Ateneo, 1959 to 2009 ZOOMING IN Rudy Romero 02/10/2010 The year that began on April 14, 2009 is a grand year for the Society of Jesus in the Philippines. That date marked the sesquicentenary — the 150th anniversary — of the Society of Jesus in this country. On April 14, 1859, 10 Jesuit priests arrived in Manila to begin which was to be a 150-year love affair between the Philippines and the Society of Jesus. The Society’s fine record as a teaching order having proceeded the new arrivals, the governor-general of the day, Fernando Norzagaray y Escudero, gave the Society authority to establish a school in Intramuros. The Escuela Municipal, which was to be the only primary school in Manila, received its first students on Oct. 1, 1859. In 1865, during the governor-generalship of Juan de Lara y Irigoyen, the Escuela Municipal became the Ateneo Municipal de Manila. The Ateneo was on its way....
