Confined for a couple of days or so just before Christmas, I hopped on a plane with family and spent the week of New Year in Bangkok, where on the last day of the trip I fainted while buying clothing materials. I shrugged the incident off, woke up real early the next day, left the hotel at 6 in the morning and got to the Suvarnabhumi International Airport in time to catch a 9:30 a.m. flight back to Manila. I presumed myself well, but I wasn’t.

Presidents may come and go, but the geopolitical interests of the USA remain pretty much the same. It’s hardly surprising, therefore, that those who hoped that the inauguration of Barack Obama almost a year ago would herald a significant change in the Philippines’ relationship with Washington have so far been disappointed.

Some of Arroyo’s critics made much of the disapproving reference in Obama’s inaugural address to “those who cling to power through corruption and deceit and the silencing of dissent.” Arroyo’s failure to meet Obama during his campaign, and later to make direct telephone contact with him after his election, was interpreted by this school of thought as punishment for her administration’s record.
