Only five Senate seats up for grabs

ZOOMING IN
Rudy Romero

The last Commission on Elections (Comelec) list of senatorial candidates that I saw had 59 names in it. With only 12 Senate seats up for grabs, the candidacies of 47 of the listed candidates will be unsuccessful. Who will end up in the 12-candidate winning circle will depend upon a trio of factors.

The first of these factors, clearly, is reelectionist status. A reelectionist has by far the best chance of winning an election among candidates. A reelectionist is always in the public eye and almost everything that he does or says is reported by the media. Thus, during the course of the campaign and — more important — on election day a reelectionist is very much in the consciousness of most voters.... MORE

Now that the Supreme Court (SC) has been deluged with at least eight petitions on GMA’s power to appoint the replacement of Chief Justice Reynato Puno when he retires on May 17, it is hoped that the brouhaha over this issue will finally die down and the high court is given the opportunity to dissect this issue in as proper and objective a manner as befits it. That these people insinuated that GMA was insistent in making the appointment even with a host of legal questions hanging just to “shield” her and her family from various cases which will surely come their way when she herself steps down from office by June 30 made their posture less than proper. But that is another story.... MORE

‘Asin at kandila’

HE SAYS
Aldrin Cardon

There was some agitation in the movement of one family who lived across my neighborhood several summers back, like its members were meeting a frantic deadline to complete their individual sets of survival kits, which I later learned consisted of several kilos of rice, some salt, a number of pieces of candles, and a motorcycle helmet for each of them.

They were to bring them to Tagaytay before 3 p.m. sets in the summer clock on that specified date, which their leader, whom they fondly called Si Ako, had predicted to be the exact time when the world would have ended.

I am not sure why Si Ako, like many other mystic cult leaders in the past had chosen the time of 3 p.m., which.... MORE
