US cites treaty, commits ‘assistance’ to RP in row
04/23/2012A senior US commander in the Pacific reaffirmed the United States’ mutual defense treaty with the Philippines as a way of response to the call of Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert del Rosario for other countries to take a stand on China’s increasingly aggressive posture in the region.
In the strongest comments yet from an American official on the South China Sea dispute, Commander of the US Marines in the Pacific Lt. Gen. Duane Thiessen said the Philippines and US were bound by a military agreement.
