Defense: House panel using impeach to boost 2013 bids

Media mileage and not establishing proof on the impeachment charges against Chief Justice Renato Corona has become the primary goal of the prosecution panel based on recent developments in the Senate impeachment court, a spokesman for Corona’s defense said yesterday.

Defense spokesman Ramon Esguerra said members of the House panel have primarily shown their penchant for gaining media mileage in time for the 2013 national elections.

Almost two weeks into the trial, the defense panel representing the beleaguered magistrates said based on the observations of some senators, “it has now become clear where the prosecution is really trying its impeachment case against CJ using the bar of public opinion, not the Senate as the constitutionally mandated impeachment court,” Esguerra said.....
