MANILA, Philippines — Two weeks ago, storm Sendong wrought havoc on Northern Mindanao and Eastern Visayas, taking the lives of more than a thousand people. But Sendong was not the only obstacle that took the Philippines by storm in 2011.

A series of oil price hikes during the first quarter drove up the prices of food and other basic commodities in the country, as in the rest of the world. Meanwhile, the Eurozone debt crisis, China's cooling economy and the continued economic slump in the United States slowed global economic growth, affecting the Philippines’ own.
