RP shows progress in protecting women from violence in conflict areas

The Philippines is one of the only two Asian countries dealing with insurgency that has showed progress in preventing violence against women in conflict areas, the United Nations said yesterday.

Nepal has joined the Philippines in successfully formulating a national action plan for women, peace and security in compliance with UN Security Council Resolution 1325, which addresses not only the undue influence of war on women, but also the integral role women should and do play in conflict management, conflict resolution, and sustainable peace.

Other conflict-affected countries, such as Afghanistan and Sri Lanka, were urged by the UN to push greater role for women in leadership, social development and conflict prevention.

“Countries across our vast and diverse region are at different stages of armed conflicts, some are in the midst of wars, others face post-conflict challenges. Yet at whatever stage in the process, the impact on women and their integral role in peace-building and recovery processes need to be highlighted,” said Ethel Sigimanu, permanent secretary, Ministry of Women, Youth and Children Affairs of Solomon Islands, who chaired the inaugural meeting of the Asia-Pacific Regional Advisory Group on Women, Peace and Security last week in Bangkok.....
