NPA suspends offensives in provinces near Mt. Bulusan
By Mario J. Mallari 11/25/2010The communist New People’s Army (NPA) has declared suspension of offensive military operations (Somo) in Mt. Bulusan areas in Sorsogon province where local residents have been affected by the eruption of the volcano.
Army 9th Infantry Division (ID) spokesman Maj. Harold Cabunoc said the military learned of the NPA Celso Minguez Command’s declaration of Somo through the media but nevertheless we welcome such move.
“We welcome it, even without any formal talk,” said Cabunoc as he stressed that the Army’s present focus in Sorsogon is “concentrated on disaster risk management operations.”
“We are not into combat operations but on security patrols… security of residents within the permanent danger zone,” said Cabunoc.
For his part, Col. Audie Delizo, commander of the 903rd Brigade’s Task Force Sagip, said that military rescue teams also welcomed the ‘peace offer’ from the communist rebels..... MORE
